Hello clever PHers!

It's been a while since I posted, but I am struggling, and my powers of Googling are failing me today.

A friend has a kit car, it has an axle from a Volvo 240 with a 3.91:1 ratio in it.

This means it tops out at 120mph, ish.

That would be fine, if it didn't have 250hp+, and weigh around 700kg. As a result, on a track day, on a full size track, it spends way too long on the limiter, and isn't as much fun as it should be.

Added to this, 1st gear is totally useless.

So we'd like to find either the 3.31:1 lowest ratio made for this diff - or even better a slightly taller one still if possible, maybe one could be made to suit?

Can anybody point me in the right direction, or does anybody have a shed full of old Volvo diffs they would be interested in searching?

Thanks very much for any help and pointers - we'd really like to get it ready to have fun this track season, and not be on the limiter so much again!

Here's a pic of the car in question:

Why does it have to be a Volvo diff? Surely any diff will do as long as you can mount it and connect the propeller and output shafts?

Fitting the axle and getting it all setup was 'a challenge' - so we'd prefer to be able to unbolt it, change the ratio, then rebolt it.

The idea of having to make a whole new axle fit, at this stage, is unappealing biggrin

It's a valid point though, and if we cant solve it this way, is an option for sure.

Find a Volvo breaker, there is one in Norfolk who supplies the guy who does my axles. 3:54 and 3.77 are both relatively common Volvo ratios.
