Hi all

I was driving my '93 1.1 fiesta the other day and it started making a knocking sound when coasting.
its fine while stationary and also when accelerating its hard to hear but when you take your foot off the accelerator (still in gear) and roll it starts making a clunking noise.
Its cable operated so its no cylinders, its had a new clutch recently so it cant be that, only thing i can think of is maybe the release bearing?
hoping its nothing like the driveshafts or a CV joint but i'm not too sure

I brought this car to play with and practise mechanics but I'm just a basic mechanic at the mo so i'm not too clued up when it comes to trouble shooting so hopefully some people here can make more sense of this

Thanks

Could be engine mountings etc...and just because it had a clutch recently, doesnt mean it couldnt be related.

If anything it points more towards that....or they didnt refit a mounting correctly, or broke one during the process.

I will double check, Ive got my hands in there and given everything a good shake to see if anything was loose or rattly but everything still seems solid. noise is only when car is driving

I suggest you stick the car in the air and check that the suspension is secure (some removed for clutch change) inc fasteners etc

I will also check that as I myself had all the suspension out a few weeks ago.
the clunking noise though feels like it spins (sorry its really hard to explain) you can kind of feel something spinning and clunking once every rotation, thats why its got me thinking the bearing.
I will check everything else first as getting to the clutch release bearing sounds like a big job (for me anyways)

Unless your description is REALLY poor it definitely isn't a clutch release bearing.

They make a grinding noise that comes/goes as you press/release the clutch.

Check loose wheel nuts as said earlier
Could be drive shaft UJ/CV joint but usually felt on/off throttle and cornering

i will be rather embarrassed if it is but also relieved that its that simple

thanks guys for the comments, im gonna get under the car tonight have proper look.

If it is a loose drive shaft can it be slotted back in or will it be a case of taking off the whole hub and knuckle and persuading it back in ?
