Recently noticed something unusual on my 1996 Toyota Hilux Surf, it's an Auto model and it's not every time but maybe every few times when going slowly mostly in traffic, when either coming to a stop or just starting off the truck seems to almost feel like the brakes are applied and struggles to move as if it's being held back slightly, as in you'll select drive and it will struggle a bit to move forward, it will always move forward though.
Any ideas as to what this issue could be?

Binding brakes possibly. Can you push the car reasonably easy on a level surface in neutral?

Does it do this all the time or just when cold & is fine once the box has warmed up & is it a case of not changing from 1st?
I've no idea what autobox is fitted to yours but the below is a fault that occurs on the ZF boxes:
"Q: I have a 4 speed ZF Auto and it sticks in first gear in the morning or when cold and is reluctant to change up from 1st gear. Once the gearbox has warmed up it shifts normally. Why?
A: The governor valve is sticking, which can be caused by contamination. i.e. clutch plates or other parts disintegrating. The fine debris finds its way past the filter and tends to accumulate in the governor, causing it to stick. A temporary solution is to remove and clean the governor. The problem will often recur as debris from damaged parts continues to build up in the governor. If the problem continues after cleaning the governor then it may be necessary it replace your Autobox."
