Worn synchro - engine off

Should any grinding/crunching due to a worn synchro be felt even when the engine is off?

I have a fifth gear crunching which happens intermittently on a Toyota MR2 but the shift is perfect every time when going through the gears with the engine off.

It's definitely difficult to get any crunching when the bits aren't turning.

Try turning the engine off then in between gearchanges....
