Hi,

I just bought my first car (name in title) and my dad was driving it home today going about 50mph and then all of a sudden, we heard a knocking and then the engine just cut out, no scraping sounds or anything like that. My Dad's a mechanic and he said it could be the fuel pump or injectors/injector seals. I just want to know if anyone else has ever had this issue and what needed fixing. Absolutely gutted so would really appreciate the help.

Thanks

It could be one of a thousand different things.
Impossible to say for certain without examining it.

As your Dad is a mechanic, why aren't you getting him to diagnose /repair it?

Because I just wanted to see if anyone knew what it was before he had a look. Just to save him some time.

When trying to start it, it still has compression but it's chucking white smoke out.

Yeah, because a mechanic looking into a problem is definitely going to pay attention to what his kid heard from a bunch of strangers on a random web site, right?

It isn't white smoke.

It is either unburnt diesel or steam.

As you are trying to start it it won't be steam.

The 1.6 engine used in the Fiests (and many other cars) is probably one of the least reliable modern diesel engines around. Amongst their many problems they are prone to cam chain tensioner failures, which can lead to slipped cam timing, so this is one thing to check. The use a timing belt from the crank to one cam, and then a chain from one cam to the other cam.
