Unfortunately it could be any one of many things but my first thoughts would be air intake leak on the rubber inlet boot, vac hose perished or similar.
One way to diagnose air leaks is to spray cold start spray around the outside of the induction system. When you spray in the vicinity of an air leak the spray will be drawn in with the air and the engine revs will pick up.
