This cars getting on my wick. Bought as a cheap second runabout, starts first time, idles perfectly, cleaned egr and MAF, dose of bg244 through fuel, serviced with all filters replaced.
Really confused I have car that runs perfect with crap mpg. If injectors were knackered it wouldn't run right, if cat was blocked it wouldn't have just flown through mot.
Anything else I could try? Only thing I've noticed if I fully rev it up through every gear it's fine, if I go into say third a bit too soon, and there's a hill it will smoke a bit?
I just crudely, quickly worked out mog by 20 quid of fuel, 120p a litre, lasted 108 miles, it's done that twice in the little time I've had it.
Fuel computer, must be from previous owner still, shows 44.7mpg lol, he must have pushed it everywhere.

Thermostat(s). Have you checked the running temp? Don't rely on the gauge as it is designed to read "normal" over a range of something like 75-100deg. Use a IR pyrometer on the top hose, or as a quick check get hold of it. You shouldn't be able to hang on to it for long.

Surprised you made any of that out, love typing on a phone, sometimes look back and think what the hell was that? :-) Now edited.
I'll check that out, funnily enough just read people talking about that last night, you never know though.
Never checked gauge much, I'll pay more attention tomorrow, thanks.

To calculate your fuel are you brimming the tank and then refuelling so you know exactky how much you have used?

Also if all your driving is around town or in traffic then you won't get great mpg in any car. Are you doing any motorway runs?

A quick calc suggests you're getting around 30 mpg. That's close enough to the 44mpg shown on the trip computer to be explained by short trips in cold weather, and/or a heavier right foot. Given that you have a trip computer you should be able to see how bad the economy is after a cold start and how much it improves on a cruise once it is up to temperature. I expect you'll find that after a cold start it needs a good ten minutes to get anywhere close to the normal economy. If so, it will take a long time under ideal conditions to make up for that initial heavy fuel consumption.

That's why. That's a crappy way to work it out - you're relying on a vague and inconsistent position on the gauge. Brim to brim, ideally over several tankfuls.

Does it sound like a V8 and look like a V8?

Comparing this mondeo to my 2007 2.2 diesel Civic is like comparing night and day. The civic you can rag the hell out of it all day long, or drive it like a nun and you were always in the mid 40,s mpg.

Do a tank to tank mesurement method. It's about the only way to get a truly conclusive MPG count.

It wasn't just this method, I knew as I had done it hundreds of times, how long the £20 worth of fuel I regularly got for the Honda lasts. £20 of fuel is £20 of fuel! :-) This Mondeo is just shocking.

In monetary terms yes but not in volume

£20 of fuel in November was 16.63 litres, £20 of fuel in December is 16.13 litres, that's half a litre less already.

and £20 of fuel this time last year would have been 16.9 litres, can you see the problem here? its a crap way of calculating.

I beg to differ, fuel in my area has been 118.0 Unleaded, 120.0 for diesel for bloody ages! That's just from memory as it's imprinted on my brain driving by the price sign locally so often!
Anyway, been out today for a long blast paying attention to temp gauge, it moved up gradually to a couple of mm short of the middle of the gauge. So looks relatively normal, and steady.
So basically putting £20 in one car, £20 in another, and there are days between how long that lasts is good enough for me to say one has lousy mpg! :-)

£20 to what? until the light comes on? If so, don't be ridiculous.

I run a 2012 Mondeo TDCi (163).

"Whole life" mpg at the moment (according to the trip computer) is around 45.6 mpg.

That's everything from long motorway runs at 'sensible' speed to crawling around town in stop-start gridlock.

I fill it around once every three weeks, from 'virtually empty' to brimmed full. Last two fills were exactly 70 litres. Working out the mpg properly recently over 2,021 miles I got a figure of 44.6 mpg. About 687 miles per tank on average, and if I get much less than 700 miles from a tank then I'm disappointed. Big miles on open roads, such as a trip to Cornwall or Derbyshire and back (two most recent long trips for weekends away) from Farnborough, and I'm looking to see closer to 800 miles from a tank.

Picking five full tank-to-full tank refills, and I come up with range figures of 653 miles, 715 miles, 729 miles, 702 miles and 657 miles from full to empty (or close to it). That's about in line with the car's own estimates of range when I fill it up.

First of all only way to find mpg is brim it and them brim it again with milage taken inbetween.

Not familiar with the 2.0 duartorq jobs.

My first thoughts would be its running cold, that will kill the MPG.
