Help!! Please
I've been driving my 2004 Nissan pick up for the last 5 years with not a penny spent. Also believed the mod had been done!
The engine is now on the garage floor minus the ruined crankshaft and whatever was left of the bearing shells. I can now see that the engine had previously been worked on. Obviously badly. My biggest concern is no.3 conrod, which has been replaced. The bolt was bent and the bolt hole is misshapen. Should I bite the bullet and completely strip the engine down or reuse the conrod. I believe that if I try to remove piston from the bottom it'll get stuck and cause more stress. Could really use some experienced advice. Thank you.

For the sake of pulling the head, and taking the piston out the top, there is no way on this earth that I'd be reusing that conrod...

Exactly the response I expected. Even as a novice I should know better!
Thanks guys. Any other tips on this job will be most welcome. Also I could do with some recommendations on where to buy all the parts I'll need. I know, want want wantrolleyes

get an exchange engine, unless you are keeping it for life.

An exchange would be ideal but I haven't found one at a reasonable price and I'd need a decent guarantee. The engine I have was done before and that didn't go so well. I'm happy enough to recondition this one. There's already been a bit of swearing and sure more to come but what a challenge..smile

I'm intrigued to know what happened to that conrod. Has the big end splayed out?

Presumably rod bolt broke or came loose or something ?

The bolt was bent. I'll dig out the photo. Some of the bolts were looser than others. The bearing shell was well splayed out too. What was left of it. Also a big chip out of the crankshaft. I'll upload some more photos.

Bent bolt and some rough looking shells.

What? No oil changes? None in 5 years?

It could/should have had 10 or more oil changes in that time depending on mileage.

No surprise it went bang.

Not a penny spent except the usual servicing costs.

See if you can get some worse shots of the bearings, those pointless out of focus ones are really useful.

If the bearing itself has not spun in the rod...and the crank journal might clean up with a little elbow grease so to speak, and you really didnt care...

You could conceivably file/grind the rod so a bearing fits nicely again and just throw it back together.

Of course it isnt the right thing to do....but it would get you running again very cheaply and it could last a very long time.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say this isn't a troll post.

The D22 is infamous for it's con rod bolt issues, seriously just do a search for D22 engine problems and there's plenty of advice on how to fix it properly.

Long story short, the con rod bolts are st and they bend, this then causes parts to hit st they aren't meant to like the bearings and leads to oil starvation and then this happens.

You haven't said what happened prior to this and what actually happened yet you want help rolleyes
Also, I think there is something else going on with those bearings, but they're so out of focus it's difficult to tell.

I think if you saw a man drowning and shouting for help you'd sling him both ends of the rope and walk off.....
