2016 Ibiza Cupra Clutch??
Discussion
Hi all, firstly apologies if this is in the wrong place.
I have a 2016 Ibiza Cupra 1.8TSI with 20k miles, which I’m guess is suffering from clutch slip issues. First question and perhaps just wishful thinking can clutch slip happen if the clutch is overheated, or is it on its way out?
Basically when driving hard, at my favourite hoon spot on my 90-minute commute home, I’ve noticed that I’m able to rev the car to excess but generate no momentum, the shift / clutch also feels ‘numb’, this happens in all upper gears. I thought it was just wheel spin at first but its definitely not – happened a few times now. This morning however went out and all appears ok.
Looking around the web there appears to be more than a few people whom have had similar issues with the diagnosis of a failing / failed clutch and a circa £2k bill.
Second question, if it is a clutch issue, that won’t be covered under warranty, any recommendations for replacement product and place to fit in and around Tyne and Wear?
Third question and perhaps more interesting, shall I just skip the impending doom and get out of it whilst its still working? I’m not really in a place to swap out yet, but the car books at around 11k and I could make up say 5k, getting me to 16k – thus what to swap too? Been looking at Pug 308GTI 270’s, Leon 184 diesel lumps, and other things that still have some warranty, not mega miles and something that can still do the dash on my way home!
Thanks.

I'll start by saying that clutch slip on a two year old car that's done 20k is not normal. First point of call should be to notify Seat and see what they come back with and offer. If you can find evidence of others with a similar issue online, it may be worth forwarding this or printing it to back up your claim. As the car is in warranty I would try and get Seat to cover this, bearing in mind you will need to apply pressure as they are unlikely to want to pay out of their own volition. Take this as far up the Seat chain as necessary and hopefully they will resolve the issue for you.
Honda had this exact issue with diesel civics and although they did try and claim this was standard 'wear and tear' there were plenty of cases where they did replace client's clutches.
Clutch slip in higher gears suggests a fault with the clutch whereas lower gear clutch wear is often evidence of abuse.
Secondly, don't panic. Your clutch is unlikely to give out overnight just try and drive in a way that doesn't provoke the issue further. Generally don't floor it in a high gear. My Honda with the aforementioned issue started slipping the clutch at about 50k. It's now on 88k and the clutch has not yet been changed and the issue is only a bit worse than it was when I first noticed it.
Also, bear in mind if otherwise you like the car the potential costs of swapping car are likely to exceed £2k. So even paying to repair it yourself is likely to be the financially prudent course of action. Although if you do go down that route it may be worth looking at an uprated clutch such as a CG Motorsport clutch. I've been eyeing up the 666 clutch and single mass flywheel kit for my own car.
Good luck and hope you get it resolved with minimal pain.

Whilst true....a good driver could make a clutch last 200k...a bad driver could kill one in 20 miles. It isnt to say there may not be a problem, but at only 20k and 2016, there should be a factory warranty there.
