Mystery Noise.
Discussion
Thought i would post this in the technical area. Any help would be appreciated.
I have a 2004 Mk2.5 MX-5 1.8. With 40k miles on it.
Over the last few months a noise has been getting progressively worse. Its a very mettalic scraping noise which gets louder as the revs climb. And louder the more you put your foot down. Is present when you lift off, again worse when the revs are high and there is alot of engine braking. But goes away completely when you press the clutch. If the clutch pedal is pressed you can rev the engine to the redline and there is no noise. There is no noise in neutral or at idle. The noise is not effected by turning left, right, or braking hard, at any speed.
You can also make the noise go away if you cruise along (at any revs) with a TINY bit of accelerator pressed. But if you push any further it comes back, and if you lift off it comes back.
If i had to describe it, its like someone holding a handful of coat hangers against a rusty spinning metal plate.
Any ideas ?

If it goes away when you take up the slack on the clutch pedal without fully disengaging the clutch, that points to the clutch release bearing as the source.
Good news - the bearing is probably only a few quid.
Bad news - it is usually a huge job to get to it. It's the sort of thing that you would usually combine with replacing the clutch.

The symptoms are clearly nothing like a clutch release bearing. The noise increases with engine load either under power or on the overrun. It's inside the gearbox. Might be a bearing, might be gear teeth. Makes little difference as either will require a new gearbox.Good news - the bearing is probably only a few quid.

Have you checked the gearbox oil level?
So taking up the slack in the uppermost portion of the travel of the clutch makes no difference. The only way to stop it is if you push through the resitance till the revs drop off a little. Albeit not fully. Then it goes. I have not checked the gearbox oil level. But will get the place im taking it to on Monday to take a look. Never seen signs of any oil underneath it. There is no whining of any kind, and this noise is not there in first or second gear even when at high revs if that makes any difference. Its loudness seems proportional to road speed. And like i say, in all circumstances you can make it go away by touching the accelerator very slightly. I had put this down to a rattling heat shield or something for a long time as it was not getting worse, but now it is.
