So I'll preface by saying my username is very apt.
I bought an engine for £10 on eBay knowing nothing more about it than it was a 3.5L Honda V6. I've since learnt that's it's a c35a from a Legend, and proceeded to take it into as many pieces as possible. (I'm going to take this moment to point out that this is much more for fun than anything practical my intentions being to get it running and eventually dumping it into an mx-5)
Now I'm not super well versed on what I'm doing but as far as I can tell the only issues with the engine are -
Very slight surface rust in one of the cylinders
Injectors are rusted to buggery
One exhaust manifold bolt sheared off and is still sat in the head
All the vacuum hoses have been cut

Question is then, what do we reckon I need to do to get it running again? (I have absolutely no concern about original parts or anything, I just want to spend as little as possible and get it running)

To get it running, assume you plan to stick with an EFI setup:

Cooling system
Exhaust system
Fuel system
Wiring harness
An engine management system suitable for this engine type, mapped to the engine
Various ancillaries such as throttle, fan controller, ignition switch could be bodged depending on your skills and preferences

It gets a bit simpler if you just want it to make noises and are willing to run it on carbs, but that would be no good if you need this to potentially be road legal.

A gasket set and some oil seals would also prove useful !

A Haynes or other similar manual might be a good place to start if it actually covers anything engine related.

Although an "idiot" buying a bare, unused, waterlogged engine even if only for a tenner.....

Really, it's going to be a huge uphill struggle to get it running as a standalone.

But no doubt when working it would be a very good engine.

Agree with comments above ^ dont buy cheap pattern gaskets or engine components i.e piston ring bearings etc, dont mix up connecting rod assemblies as bearings are graded/sized to individual crankshaft journals or should be they were when I was at Honda , if something looks worn or wrong dont presume it will be OK it wont frown its an Honda engine after all and they dont suffer fools gladly scratchchin an hamfisted attitude will be rewarded with grief in other words headache most of all good luck with your project , maybe try to get a workshop manual PDF etc for tightening torques, bolts that must be renewed general tolerances/specs etc etc

Thanks everyone for your responses, not sure how to do multiple quote so will just reply in order

Cooing system should be pretty easy especially with the pick and pull scrappie near me but that can wait till I'm closer to ready to start.
Fuel system, I think I mentioned the injectors are probably knackered but forgot to say the fuel pressure regulator is missing and one of the rails is cracked so I'll be replacing all of those
I'm intending to stick with EFI but since I think it will be nigh on impossible to get it running in its factory configuration I think an aftermarket ECU/wiring harness might be easier (I was looking at the haltech elite 750)
I'll probably bodge those bits untill I'm ready to drop it into a chassis :')

I've seen full engine rebuild gasket sets about the internet but aren't 100% sure if I should be looking at specific brands etc

Stevieturbo
I've found a couple of workshop manual PDFs but not a haynes sadly (I'd prefer a physical book)
I don't think it was waterlogged but to me the head gasket looked worse for wear and my current theory is that coolant got into the cylinder and caused the rust
I know I've got a real battle to get it going but that's part of the fun! (right?)

As far as I can tell the internals are in good condition (no scoring anywhere that I can see, still cross hatching in the cylinders) so hopefully won't need to replace anything major, got some feeler gauges in the post so I can start checking clearances soon.
I've thankfully found a workshop manual PDF with all the torques in it and have the conrods are (very professionally) numbered with a sharpie so they go back in where they came out.

I think my biggest concern at the moment is the vacuum hoses, as a good number of the components for the assembly are missing and are going to be a fortune to replace though outside of throttle bypass (Variable length intake?) and EGR they don't seem to be connected to much so I'm wondering if I can get away without them (not ideal but I'm on a shoestring budget being a student)

Thanks again for all of your responses!
Dom

Buy "the Engine Builder's Handbook" for a generic guide. Used ones are only a few quid.
