I've had to have a new gearbox put in on a five year old Cayenne Turbo S. The new one is in but the guy reckons he now needs to drive 250 miles to bed it in.

As I haven't ever had a whole gearbox replaced I don't know if this is actually a thing or wether he just wants to take his girlfriend away for the weekend in my car?

Cant you drive it 250 miles to bed it in?

I had the gearbox in the kitcar rebuilt by a reputable bloke and he said so some gentle miles till its bedded in, but wasnt offering his services!

It's apparently got to be tweaked at 50, 100 and then 250 miles and the garage isn't very close to me so would be a bit of a hassle.

Just wanted to check I wasn't being a mug. It sounded plausible but 250 miles seemed a lot.

I've been advised to treat new gearboxes and diffs gently for the first few hundred miles so the running surfaces have a chance to bed in and then gradually work up to normal use. I don't know what 'tweaking' would be necessary (or possible, without removing the 'box) during the bedding in period - maybe an oil change? If it has a remote linkage, maybe he wants a chance to adjust that?
