Hi all,

Have been quoted £1257 for the below repairs, to summarise. Went to start my Audi A4 and a loud bang from engine bay followed by some light smoke/steam that quickly dissapated. Car will start and run but loud popping and spluttering (sounds like a tractor!) Rac came out and couldn't diagnose problem with their plug in diagnostics kit. Taken to recommended garage and quoted

-inlet manifold replacement
-water pump & cam belt (already replaced in service 10,000 or so miles ago)
-rocker cover gasket
-spark plugs
-thermostat housing

Bill of £108 for initial diagnosing to be paid also.

Does this seem accurate?

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help a newcomer smile

If the cambelt/water pump has already been done correctly, then it doesn't need doing again, if it does then you need to take it back to the place that did it.

Did they explain what the original problem was? I wonder whether the cam belt has jumped a tooth, or it has backfired into the intake manifold and split it. Without understanding the problem, it's hard to judge whether that's a reasonable fix for it. In particular it seems a little strange to be replacing the pump, unless their explanation includes something that damaged that.

A better question might be...why on earth are they replacing those parts ?

You havent stated what any diagnosis or problem actually is...and it would be hard to fathom how any of those parts relate to the problem you've very briefly gave us an indication of.
Likewise history leading up to it is non existent....ie you're just saying you woke up one morning to go to a perfectly normal working car, tried to start it and it was banjaxed ?

Why are they replacing the rocker cover gasket [apart from the bleeding obvious one]
Inlet manifold kinda general that too.

Did the drive cog on waterpump sheer off taking belt with it? So whats this about timing belt??

So many questions. Just whats wrong with it??
