Before I swapped the engine on my 1.7cdti combo the coolant used to get to about 95 according to the guage on a warm day and the fan would keep coming on through out the day. I put it down to maybe a lazy water pump or the thermostat or sensor.

It is still behaving exacly the same with a different engine, don't think I ever heard the fan on my last 1.7cdti because it never went past half way on the guage, this leads me to think the problem is with the ECU? what else could it be?

Clogged radiator, or the fins have rotted and fallen out.

I've told you before, the OEM gauge is all but completely useless.

Get an OBD scanner, cheap or otherwise to get correct readings.

First fan speed will come on at actual 101deg, 2nd 103 and full speed at 105deg. And even at these temperatures, the OEM gauge will be nowhere near 100 on it.

On the OEM gauge typical position should be the middle or slightly below ( indicated 90 ) but it will run around 91deg ( 89deg stat )

If the aircon is turned on, that will also bring on the main fan intermittently for the purposes of aircon which is the same fan as the engine cooling fan on a combo.

Cheap OBD reader, and get an app for your phone/tablet, Torque or something similar.

( Or if you have VauxCom or OpCom, then you can get correct temperature readings on it )
