57 vauxhall astra suspected head gasket HELP!!
Discussion
Hi all need some advice!! Woman here so need some practical advice please.
Bought a Vauxhall Astra 1.7CDTI Diesel about 6 months ago, was about a two and a half hour drive to get the car and it made it home fine. Anyway about two months ago driving around and the car came to a hault spat all water out and was dry. So waited upon a friend with plenty of water to get us home probably two miles away from where the car stopped, Got it home took into a garage where they said they thought it was thermostat so had that changed and they said that it’s rececntly had new water pump. So went home car running fine , then the battery started going flat all the time got it tested etc turns out altinator wasn’t working so got new altinator put on. Got home the other day and the car smelt rather hot so let it cool a little took the cap of coolant tank and it was like a redy/rusty colour throth inside the tank which as it cooled disappeared. Partner is now flushing the lot and it’s still coming out that colour!! Please can someone help. There is no signs of the creamy white on oil cap either. Anyone else had this problem much help would be appreciated I do love the car but right now it’s starting to test my patients lol
Oh and also the car keeps going into limp mode get to 3000 revs and it won’t go no further have to turn the car off and back on again for it to kick in, our computer on it and it’s giving a code for over boosting. That is the other problem with the car sometimes it’ll drive fine and turbo kicks in other times it’s like a slug stuck in limp mode

So why do you disbelieve whoever changed the stat ?
Surely they did some testing to see if HG integrity is still ok ?
You seem to say that other than the colour of the water....the car drives ok, apart from the alleged overboost problem which will of course be unrelated.
And when the stat was changed ( or indeed pump ) was the coolant flushed at that time ? what was put back in ? was it clean ? what colour was it ?
How long has it taken to change from that ? With a proper scanner connected, what are engine temperatures like ? OEM needle gauges are all but useless so not really worth paying much attention to for this. Although I think on an Astra you can get this data viewed in proper format on the info display.
Does the heater work as normal at all times ?
Is it using or losing any coolant ?
Overboosting is another totally different matter, and would need a proper check and drive to view what is happening, and not just a cheap generic code reader.
But if you're saying this fault actually kills the engine forcing you to stop, then it is highly likely far more than an overboosting problem which would just cause a limp mode.

I assume you check coolant levels and tyre pressures every few weeks. Is the car losing coolant?
What colour is the coolant normally?
