Hi all,

First post here so please be nice!

My missus has a J11 Qashqai and it has recently had a timing chain issue diagnosed by Nissan (4 weeks out of warranty). After a bit of back and forth, Nissan refused to replace it (despite the timing chain having a service interval of 100,000 miles and the car only having done 25,000).

Anyway, long story short, the car has gone to a local garage (not used before but came very highly recommended) who gave us a price to replace the timing chain. This afternoon (when we were due to collect the car) the garage called and asked for more money to replace the gaskets. The excuse from the garage was that they were told that the kit from nissan contained everything but the gaskets weren’t part of the kit. They have basically said that unless we pay the extra money then they will put the old gaskets back on and they can’t guarantee they won’t leak.

I don’t think this is right. Any advice/experience of the same things before from anyone?

Many thanks

Pericoloso

Exactly which gaskets ? and how much ?

Timing chain is no small job.....hard to know whether there would be an expectation of a kit to include gaskets. It probably should...but things dont always go like that.

Surely they arent that expensive ? And now this delay in decision making...will be the garage losing money too with a car in pieces on the ramp

Gaskets are best part of an extra £200. They spoke to my missus about it so didn’t go into detail about what is needed.

It isn’t our decision making that’s the issue. We only found out about it at 5pm this afternoon when they called and said it wouldn’t be done.

My problem is that we don’t know about cars, the garage does. Should they change the gaskets as a matter of principle when doing this sort of a job? How can they guarantee they haven’t caused an issue taking the car apart to fit the timing chain? That’s why I wondered how normal this is.

Please don’t think take it that I think they are trying it on. I’m genuinely trying to work out if this is normal or not. Ultimately if they have made a mistake then we shouldn’t have to foot the bill for it?

Your replies are appreciated!!!

Without seeing the gaskets in question, their design and condition..no idea whether replacement or re-using would be an option.

£200 does seem a bit excessive though, but main dealer prices can tend to be silly for some stuff.

Although if they were essential and are in stock at the dealer, it would seem strange the dealer didnt mention this aspect when they sold the chain kit.

If they are insisting on the £200 in order to warranty the job, then it would probably make sense to pay it. And they better pray it is done correctly with no leaks otherwise they will have to stand over the job and correct it.

Nissan don't tend to use solid gaskets anywhere except heads and manifolds.

Everywhere else they use liquid sealant.

Part number KE100-50000.

(Source: 25 years in Nissan Parts, I even remembered that part number having got out 6 years ago, used to sell shed loads of it).

HTH.

I’m not surprised the gaskets aren’t in the kit but £200.00 sounds steep even for genuine parts. You could ring your local dealer and get a price.
