Simple question - how long should it take a decent mechanic to strip down a corsa d engine to get to the head gasket?

thanks for quick responses - not 6 hours then (which is what I was told how long it took)?

apparently is out of car now and head needs to be taken to specialist for assessment - at least another week till i get car back , and think myself lucky.

Agreed about 6 hours, although the overall price would depend if you did the basics and fitted quality parts.

It all depends on how he stripped it , you can take the head off in an hour but to put it back on properly you have to take engine mounts ,water pump, timing casing ,sump ,exhaust down pipe alternator ect ect . so maybe he stripped it properly and will go back together quickly .

All corsa d's are the same then ?

I rather doubt every engine is the same.....and no engine has been stated.

And some people are rough as fk and will tear things apart...often leading to butchery putting it back together. And others are more careful.

you need a new mechanic , laugh i think 75% of corsa d's are 1.2 ? 2009 onwards are vvt but basically the same engine give or take .

Its not rocket science but it is a lot of bolts to do head ,chain , sump ,timing case ect ect its probably 100- 150 bolts in total ,i've done quite a few .

You're not being very specific about what was or wasn't done. 6hrs is ok if it includes removing it from the car, but not if the engine was already out.
But then it's doubtful you'd take an engine out to do a HG....

car has had a 'losing coolant' problem since I bought it. Initially had water pump and thermostat replaced under warranty - over a few months still had problem with coolant blowing out of header tank periodically so went back for check and another thermostat was fiited. Didn't fix the problem so was then told it sounds ilke it could be 'blown head gasket' ( all same garage). i have been told that the engine needed to be stripped down appropriately to get to the head gasket, to then be taken to a specialist elsewhere to see if it needed 'skimming' or was 'cracked'. I have been fed so many contradictions, bs and waffle over the last week and counting that I am just trying to get a few opinions from people that have experience of the job - it sounds like theyare going to have my car for at least another week and theyve already had it 10 days. Thanks

There's Chinese Whispers going on here.

Yes, the head needs to come off to do the HG, along with all the fripperies that need to come off to get to it and get it out - that's "stripped down appropriately". That's very different to fully stripped down. The engine block itself won't come out of the car. The head - alone - would then go off for checking for flat and for pressure-testing.

Not sure why anybody would fully strip down a 10yo cooking Corsa engine anyway - you'd just lob a good 'un from a scrappy in.
