W212 E220 engine removal - with or without gearbox?

Posted this in Mercedes forum but this might be a better place - asking for a friend who's in a spot of trouble.
He's removing an E220 engine, he's got a replacement engine on a crate. What's the process for this age of Merc - remove the engine and gearbox separately or remove the front end and take the whole lot out in one go? Can the gearbox be un-mounted in situ?
