So he fitted the wrong oil filter and it made noises ?

Really ? Like a grunt, a squeak, a rattle ? And how do you know it was a wrong filter ?

And it's taken you 2 months to try and correlate these things with mpg changing ? Or is that just something different ?

Never mind the economy - what have you done to fix these two major problems that you noticed a couple of months ago?

Cars tend to get lower MPG in colder months in my experience. My car normally does 50mpg but only getting early to mid 40s, my old car would get 40mpg in warm months but about 35 in cold months.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the cold makes the engine work harder and also you've likely got heaters going hence the lower MPG. Could be normal, but if you're worried there's no harm getting it booked in to be looked over, that's also the only way of finding out for sure what's wrong, people posting on here haven't seen the car so it would need to be checked by a professional.

Ok. Some advice then.

It’s really helpful if, when you post about a problem, you post everything you know so that people can help swiftly.
There are quite a few trolls on PH, so your post looked dodgy, especially with your recent joining of the madhouse.

I can echo the post above.

I often saw new diesel drivers worried after the clocks changed and the temps dropped. If your main journeys are only, say, ten miles each, you’ll be harder hit as the engine doesn’t get properly up to temp.

The only rattling an oil filter could cause would be the bottom end. Oops!

So what was going on to cause the weird noises and engine light? Fitting the wrong size oil filter or the wrong grade oil wouldn't cause either of these symptoms unless taken to absurd extremes.

There's about zero chance of that happening and if it did, it sure as hell wouldnt stop when a different one was fitted. It'd be fked !

Really? I would have thought something else entirely would be far more logical.

An oil filter only affects the flow of oil. Am I wrong?

Hydraulic lifters could be pressure sensitive. Rattling doesn't always mean a bearing has gone - and if the rattling stops, probably it wasn't a bearing.

And what does the oil feed in a modern engine?

Yep, I'm dense. Completely forgot about hydraulic lifters and even the timing chain tensioner on our R56 MINI.

Did they use the correct grade of oil?

My wife had a Civic V-tec E. The first service saw it filled with Castrol Magnatec and the MPG went down by around 20%. It turns out the engine is very oil sensitive and had to have a specific type and grade. A quick technical bulletin from Honda and oil change later saw the car back to 45mpg.
