Hi all,

I bought a battery conditioner from Halfords for my wife's Mini a few years ago. The instructions specifically said not for use with cars which have automatic stop/start technology, which hers didn't.

I've now got a spare conditioner from Carcoon, and am trying to find out if it is suitable for a Range Rover Sport which does have stop/start.

What particular properties of the Halfords conditioner would prevent it being suitable for stop/start, and if I did use one on a car that had stop/start, what would the implications be?

Is there any way I can find out, from technical specifications, if the Carcoon conditioner is suitable or not? I've called them and they were unable to say whether it would be a problem or not.

Thanks in advance.

A car using stop/start technology may have an AGM battery instead of a conventional wet battery. AGM batteries have different electrical properties and need a charger/conditioner designed for that job. If you used a wet battery style charger on an AGM battery it would overcharge it and probably burst the seals.

The device I bought from Halfords is switchable between standard and stop-start battery use. Can't find it listed now, but they do list one that is suitable for all types: https://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/garage-equ...

I'd agree, if it doesn't say 'suitable for stop-start' then it ain't!
