Morning all,

Does anybody know how motorised throttle bodies are supposed to behave?

We have a nice clean MK3 Clio 1.2 75bhp version and it's recently had some starting problems.

When it does start it runs fine - apart from a slightly bouncy take off when it's cold.

I was going to spray some Easystart in today but the throttle butterfly refused to move when the pedal was pressed.

Does anybody know if this is normal? I.e. ECU refuses to open throttle beyond the minimum amount when the engine isn't running?

Why do you think the ECU would want to open the throttle when the engine isn't running?

It is a computer and that is illogical....... Spock.

Clearly you don't want to force it or you could do some damage to it.

More importantly, does it move when the engine is running & you put your foot down?

If so, leave well alone.

I don't think it would want to open the throttle but maybe it does as the pedal tells it to. I'm just wondering what ultimately has control. Is it the ECU or the throttle pedal?

I will leave it alone until I understand whether it's behaviour is normal or not.

The ECU controls the throttle body as you have already proven.

As I said, I would be more concerned if the throttle body butterfly does not open when the engine is running, because until the engine is running or at least turning over, it won't do anything, it doesn't need to.

Obviously it is the ecu that controls it.

The throttle blade will do what the manufacturer has programmed the ecu to do, with one of the factors taken into consideration being where your foot is. But it certainly isnt the only one.

And by starting problems....exactly what do you mean ? Has the car been looked after and serviced correctly ? Your post is worded like you may sell cars ?

Worded like I sell cars? In what way?

The engine will just turn over without firing up. Last weekend I could hear the motor in the throttle body twitching when throttle was applied without the engine running but without obvious movement from the butterfly.

The engine burst into life after I'd given it a bit of Easystart. Might have been coincidence.

Clios do seem to suffer from jerky throttles from cold from a brief internet search.

Sounds like the start of a sales advert lol.

As always..basics.

Fuel, air, spark. Check it has all these things when not starting. Is the battery sound ? you make no mention of whether it is turning over correctly or not.

Are there any fault codes etc ? Once started, does it drive normally, no other symptoms etc etc etc ? Hot or cold any different ?

And again, has the vehicle been maintained properly ?
