Hello All,

I have a 2013 Renault Kangoo Van with a 1.5DCI 75HP engine that is making an odd noise - I'm hoping you lot will be able to help me diagnose the issue before I fork out loads of cash on the wrong components. The van has done 143,000 miles.

The Noise:

- I would describe it as a growling or grinding noise, coming from the front end. It is not a knock and it is not a wheel bearing rumble. Although I do get a knocking noise from an old track rod and perhaps an old engine mount (there is excessive movement on the gearstick when the accelerator is pressed or released).

When it happens:

- The noise begins when I lift off the accelerator, exactly at the moment when the engine beings to engine brake which corresponds to the movement of the gearstick.

- The noise is intermittent but occurs very regularly and varies a little in how loud it is.

- Originally the noise was most prevalent in 4th gear but I have begun to hear it in lower gears. I suspect that it is happening in 5th too however it only gets loud at about 1500rpm so I suspect that in 5th it is just inaudible.

- It is not affected by braking or cornering.

- Recently, and only on a couple of occasions, I can hear a similar noise when accelerating however it is much quieter.

Known Problems:

- O/S driveshaft carrier bearing has some play.
-N/S track rod end has some play.
-At least one engine mount is faulty. There is sometimes a loud knock from the engine bay when going over speed bumps although this is quite rare.
-The clutch is quite old and bites high. When cold it does not always disengage properly.
-I sometimes have difficulty selecting first gear, particularly when the engine is cold. Recently, it has taken longer to engage most of the other gears (4th is operating very smoothly). The most prominent issue with gear selection is that first gear sometimes won't disengage on the first attempt when cold.

Any suggestions regarding what the cause of this noise is would be much appreciated! I am hoping somebody has had a similar issue resulting from something simple like the engine mount or the drive shaft.

Thanks,
Rob

Perhaps the engine assembly is moving under load so that a rotating part rubs against something? If so you may be able to provoke it while stationary by taking up drive against the parking brake in forward or reverse to load the transmission. With the bonnet up, a spotter might be able to figure out where the noise is coming from.

We have a similar intermittent noise that was speed dependent to begin with, then got to the point were it was fairly constant. Not had it fixed yet but the garage diagnosed it as a duff wheel bearing. Is the noise coming from one side?

It could easily be a mounting, but when you're already listed known problems, you really should fix those first in case they are related.

I've narrowed down the source of the noise a little.

I lifted the front end so that the wheels could spin freely. With the car in 5th gear and the clutch released, you could clearly hear the grumbling/grinding noise and as I rev'ed the engine the noise got much louder. With the clutch depressed, the noise stopped completely.

With the van in neutral I could easily spin both wheels by hand and couldn't feel any resistance at any point of rotation (and no noise). So this suggests to me that the noise is either the clutch pressure plate or the gearbox!

I also cannot get the noise to repeat using the hand break and loading the engine, which suggest engine mounts are unfortunately not the issue.
