Odd noises help - Corolla
Discussion
I cant seem to audibly narrow down two issues I'm having with my Toyota Corolla. Hoping by describing them you lot might have an idea. Rest assured the car will be going in for these to be checked by regular mechanic for its MOT in early March.
First one is a noticble low pitch whine at speeds over 50mph. It builds up with speed. I cant tell if its a front wheel bearing or the gearbox. It doesnt sound to be one sided AFAIK but central. It happens at speed over 50mph and seems to unaffected by clutch position, which gear you are in or change pitch with steering input. Hard to describe but its like an old bus in top gear building up to its top speed if that makes any sense. Sort of hoping its the bearings and given the cars age I would want to go down the replacement gearbox route. I'm quite prudent on oil changes and it has had a gearbox oil change a couple of years ago.
Second one is a rhythmic scuffing (varies with speed) type noise coming the drivers side wheel when turning left. It has been looked at before and mechanic couldnt see anything that could be causing it. He adjusted the handbrake a bit but I then suffered from a binding handbrake so was adjusted again. I cant see how the brakes can move in anything than inline with the drum (disk foot brake / drum hand brake) even when the rear wheels are fixed in position. If that makes sense?
Appreiate noise are hard to diagnose over the internet.
