I don't know whether that's a diesel, but if so it might have a DPF. These look similar to a cat and could be confused for one by an inexperienced junior fitter. Cats are expensive and vehicles usually only have one. Sometimes with bigger engines additional small 'pre-cats' are used close to the engine to give better warm-up performance but these are usually built into the manifold/headers rather than part of the exhaust system under the car.

In any case the people who sell these things will sell whatever is supposed to be on the car so it would be very difficult for your fitter to install extra cats that weren't part of the standard spec.

Have a look through the Bosal catalogue:
http://www.bosal.com/en/product-catalogue

Click on the red 'exhaust europe'
Next window do the boxes on the right.
Next window click 'search your exhausts and accessories'
Next window enter the details of your car in the appropriate boxes & you'll eventually finish up with pics of the systems & the part numbers.

You've not provided enough details of your car, but it does appear there are two cats, one that the exhaust manifold pipes join at & another just downstream. Nothing near the rear silencer though.

I think quickfit are talking rubbish. I don't know the car but if you enter your car registration number here: https://www.mister-auto.co.uk/catalytic-converter-... it should give the correct vehicle and you can then see what the cat part of the exhaust should look like.

I entered the reg of a 2012 sport coupe 1.23TSI FR (105bhp) and it shows a single cat, flexible coupling and then a straight pipe under the car. No second cat......

What did the MOT actually fail on?

thanks very much brman , cant really tell from the pictures if its got a second cat as im not sure how big it would be , i hope your right itll be a lot less expensive, im going to pop into a seat dealer on monday so ill let you know how i get on . by the way it failed on carbon monoxide exceeds limits and exhaust noise is excessive. once again thanks for everybodys help

well, if your reg came up with a picture like this one: https://www.mister-auto.co.uk/catalytic-converter/...

then I can tell you that the big (vertical) cylinder at the front is a cat and the smaller one (at the start of the horizontal pipe) is a flexible coupling. No second cat.

Does sound best to let someone (other than kwikfit) look at it.
It could be a failed cat, dodgy sensors or a hole in the exhaust. Sometimes the flexible couplings fail and bodgers replace them with rigid pipes. That then leads to broken pipes, joints or mainfolds. So if the kwickfit guy found something that didn't look original at the front under the car it could well be that.
But yes, someone who knows that they are looking at should be able to tell you what is what pretty quickly.

On the details Bosal show just one cat.

CO can be for a number of reasons & would be picked up at any MoT station.
Was the engine at normal working temp when you took it in?
I usually take ours for an hours drive before arriving at the test station incl a few up & downs on the local nsl dual carriageway to ensure the cat is at working temp.

'Excessive noise' is the opinion of the tester & another tester may not consider it excessive. Unfortunately you are dealing with an organisation that makes a lot of money selling exhausts.....
