Chrysler voyager no reverse gear

Hi , good evening , I have a Chrysler grand voyager .... yeah I know , its been a pretty reliable hack till now , good work horse , but unfortunately it'll only go forwards , reverse has given up ... I believe the gear box has probably gone , linkage all works and the lights on the dash show reverse selected but you don't get that kind of thunk when its selected .... just throwing it out there , any ideas ? thanks for any input !!

It's on the drive at the moment , I'll get it on some level ground , and post tomorrow , thanks for your reply ...

Low fluid would be my guess.

ummm ... slightly embarrassing , oil is high ... 2 levels hot and cold its on the higher hot level ... and just moved it and will only go in the L setting ... I guess its got to be worth draining some oil out , I've never checked it so must have been like it for quiet some time ...

Yeah I'd take some fluid out, hopefully nothing's failed. They're better with a little under than over.

With auto there is usually a process for checking level.

Is usually involves selecting gears then wating a set time before checking the level.

Does it need checking with the engine running as if it does and you had it switched off when you checked it the readings will be falsely high ?

Hi , thanks for the input , turns out yes there's a procedure for checking the levels .. level ground is a good start ... run the engine up for at least a minute select all the gears on the selector , ending up with park and then dip it .... hot and cold levels , so obviously common sense on the heat of the gear box oil ... turns out levels are indeed fine ... so procedure is everything !!! made a few enquiries to auto gearbox specialists locally (bournemouth) apparently common with diesel cars - mine is petrol .. looking more like its terminal .. may just change the oil , but I'm not holding my breath ! - again all feed back much appreciated ...
