X5 DPF problems loss of low power
Discussion
Hi new to this so please bare with me, I’ve got an X5 Msport started to loose power from stand still or going up hill, then the good old DPF warning came on, So basically so far I have had the small turbo replaced I’ve had DPF off and cleaned, new glow plugs new sensors here and there, new pipes here and there, the garage has rang to say it’s fixed so I picked it up after handing over loads of cash 😭 I got half way home the car had a bit more power than when I took it in but it’s nowhere like it was, and there are fumes coming into the car so I turned round took it back and it’s still in there now, it’s looking like they don’t know where to turn next as to what’s wrong with it, so here I am on here begging for any information that may help me, I absolutely love this car I’ve only owned it for a few months I really need it back, thanks for reading and help if you can. welcome to diesels, just a crazy idea here but give it to BMW to worrry about? or a garage who knows what they are doing on a X5.Hi thank you to you all for all your advice, the car is 2008, the car has been with a BMW specialist garage for the last 3 weeks, and it’s still with them now, and these guys are struggling to find the problem, it’s been on every specialized machine possible and the DPF has been taken off and cleaned, plus new sensor fitted, they have also tried the regeneration where they drive at ?mph for 40 mins just to see if it rectified the problem but still no joy, DPF warning light still comes on then goes off again, to be honest I’m really sad at the minute I’m worried that my car may never be fixed, I’ve already handed over £1400.00 when they said it was all fixed just ended up taking it back the day after, 🤷🏼♀️ What can I do? X
Hi thanks for your reply, yes they’ve taken off the DPF and cleaned it, they said when they take it off they will look at it and if it needs replacing rather than just cleaning they will tell me, but they said it was ok it just needed cleaning, they also replaced the DPF sensor which they now say needs another DPF sensor replacing as it has 3 sensors in total?? 🤷🏼♀️ I’m not a mechanic apparently they will be fitting the new sensor today and see what the readings are after it’s been fitted. X
Sounds like parts darts.
Were you offered the chance of replacement dpf (expensive), or were you assured you could have it cleaned and no replacement offered as an option?
If, I mean IF, they offered you a new 1 as an option and you didn't go for it, then you have to accept some chasing around like this to sort it. If they didn't offer you that choice then I think they are responsible for sorting it, IF they told you that was the problem. Are they now finding more problems, so were not sure of their diagnosis.
Suggest getting another opinion from a specialist.

Hi all thanks again for your input, it’s friday afternoon and I’ve just got off the phone to the garage who are now saying that they can’t get the car to “regenerate” to clear the DPF problem, I said I’ve already paid you to take DPF filter off and clean it ( that’s what they recommend me to have done) and for DPF sensor to be replaced, so why do you now need to regen the car? They said they can’t get it to temperature of 75 it will only go to 73 and car will not regenerate until it gets to 75 or over, so they are now say I need to have a new temp sensor fitted to ECU unit to get it to the temperature for regeneration and they hope that will sort DPF issue, but they are saying that they can’t guarantee that this will sort the DPF problem out but they want me to part with another £400 to find out, they have had my car now for 4 weeks and it’s in a worse condition now than it was when I took it in, honestly I don’t know what to do I need some help here guys! Please xxx
Hi coilspring, regarding the DPF he said when he takes it off the car he will look at it and if it isn’t damaged and he thinks it will clean up then he will get it cleaned, but if it looks damaged and I need a new DPF filter he will ring me to let me know, I had no phone call and they got it cleaned so I’m assuming it wasn’t damaged and just needed cleaning x

Ask them what you have paid for so far, and why ? Ask for it in writing, unless it is clear on the invoice. Also ask if a new dpf would have sorted it ?
Temp sensor? If they are saying it needs to get to 75 degrees then they must be talking about coolant temp- that’s a pretty basic sensor and not much can go wrong with it. So if it ain’t the sensor( which I doubt) then you are looking at your cooling system not getting up to a high enough Temp to carry out the regen - which can be caused by a few things - most commonly it’s due to one or both of your thermostats sticking open( one main thermostat and a separate thermostat on the egr system)
Easy enough to test when they are removed. You would think a bmw specialist would know this tho but it doesn’t sound like they are particularly clued up.
If the fault was that it wouldn’t regenerate then I doubt you needed the dpf removed and cleaned - you could have just got the initial problem stopping the regen sorted and let the car regen itself.
Also they should have lots of power all the way through the Rev range - if there wasn’t after turbo replacement then they may not have connected the vac pipes up correctly. Worth getting it checked again
