I have owned a skoda fabia 2006 1.2 htp for around 4 months and the fuel consumption is awful. I get around 250 maybe more on a full tank and thats mainly driving around town with a steady foot. The engine management light came on a while ago and the code was checked by a mechanic and he said something about the lamda senor. He said it will be fine and he cleared it ever since then it hasnt come back on help pleaseeee.

What is the actual fuel consumption? What is the normal fuel consumption for this type of car in that type of use? If it's mainly being driven around town I would expect the fuel consumption to be relatively poor.

As the above reply. We need to know more.

Also, has the car been well serviced? If it has a Mass Airflow sensor, is it performing as it should? Tyres at the right pressure?

A long list of possible causes, and there might be nothing wrong at all.

Actual figures for the vehicle is combined 47 urban cold 35.8 extra urban 58.9 .I also forgot to mention the epc light shows up when key is in ignition and I have serviced the car well a few months ago the engine mechanically pulls sounds and seems well. And since I have had the vehicle I have spent a couple hundred quid with fixing up the drive shaft x2 Along with gear box water leak and handbrake with tracking issues the car has been a real bummer. But I want it to be solid as it is my first car which i very much like so what can any of you advise to me on what to do.

That number is completely irrelevant without knowing how much the tank holds. If it only holds 25 litres, that's actually not bad consumption...

What does the on-board computer think the consumption is?

Another thread that, with knowledgeable people at the ready, is like pulling teeth.

OP: what is the ACTUAL mpg over a long journey or whole tank of fuel?

What sort of driving? Lots of stop/start in towns? High speeds on dual carriageways?

Please answer the questions! smile

That sounds okay to me, you shouldn't worry.

What? The official figures sound ok? So what? The OP probably isn’t getting anything like them.

John, it would help to know:
1. What type of driving you do? E.g. lots of town driving, lots of b road or motorway.
2. Do you drive fast or do you try to hypermile?
3. Does the car have a trip computer? What does it say it is doing?
4. Are your tyres pumped up properly to the correct psi?
5. Does the engine seem to get up to temp ok?
6. Any funny smells when driving?

Your 25mpg seems a little low, my old 1.4 68hp Fabia did around 40mpg extra urban on average and that was an old pushrod engine that was not efficient in the slightest.

Edit: I see you have answered some above already. 25mpg around town isn't terrible for an older petrol engine. Driving style can make all the difference.

That's remarkably good fuel economy for that type of driving. You might get double that on a long cruise.

Yep, hold back on condemning the car until you've discovered the joys of driving outside towns and cities. This time of year, lights, heaters and cold engines fight any chance of economical driving. Add crawling traffic to the equation and it's all anyone's guess.

I bet in your particular car (small engine, relatively light) with a gentle right foot and sweeping A roads you'll see 45-55mpg, depending on a number of factors.

Enjoy!
