Just thought i would share this. I have mk4 golf tdi 1.9 pd with 170k on it. The clutch started to slip so i had it replaced with a single mass flywheel conversion kit from ecp (transmech brand). All installed ok no issues but the drive was awful. Vibration when taking up drive. Noise. Basically it turned the car into a tractor. It was that bad I have had the original dual mass flywheel put back in (as the original was ok) along with another new clutch, now the car is perfect. So take my advice and don't bother with budget single mass flywheels in vag pd tdi models. It will be a waste of time and money.

Tens of thousands of people will have done the same conversion without issue....probably hundreds of thousands ( perhaps with varying brands )

Clearly you did have a problem, could have been many causation's though.

Ultimately a new DMF and OEM clutch is always the best option though

Hmm, we put a solid flywheel in my mate's 1.9 TDI A3, and frankly I'd have been hard pushed to notice much difference.

Maybe it was the brand?

I think that was 90% of the issue.

Have fitted solid conversions before without issue. But I avoid cheap clutches like the plague. Always happy to pay £50 extra for brands like luk, valeo etc rather than risk having to do the job twice.

Anecdotaly I have heard of cheap replacement kits still using the solid friction plate of the DMF clutch in a solid replacement kit, could be that.

NTS. If you are changing from DMF to solid the friction plate MUST be sprung.

Had a few VW/Audi TDI cars fitted with them and they have ruined the cars. Higher power versions, PD130 especially when the car is remaped, generate serious vibration.give it 20k miles and the car will be full of rattles. Very sore on the gearbox as well, had to put 2 boxes into a Passat due to this, both lost 3rd gear, second box only lasted 20K. I sold the car in the end. Wouldn't buy a car with one fitted.
