Repair from garage & now makes a noise.[recording attached]
Discussion
Hi,
I have a ford fiesta 2002, petrol, manual, unmodified.
Updated - video: .. https://streamable.com/gxyn4
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they think could be causing the following sound:
https://vocaroo.com/i/s0hLkxb9oFJf
It happened after I took it into a garage for a water pump replacement (the bearings were worn out and made noise at 2,000 rpm -- different noise to this) The original issue was fixed.
They also replaced the drive & alternator belt same time.
However once I got back home, the next morning when the engine was cold, it makes this noise. It occurs between lifting the clutch as it goes into gear.
To test it stationery, I can put it in 1st, hold the brake and gently lift the clutch up until it begins to engage slightly and try to move car. This happens when normally driving.
It goes away fully when the engine is warm.
If anyone could help, that'll be great.
Thank you.

Test. Get it to make the noise, with someone standingby with the bonnet open and a can of WD40 in their hand. As it makes the noise, spray the fan belt with WD. If noise stops, you know what's causing it!
Could be 1/ slight misalignment of the pulleys, or, 2/ just a new fan belt.
1/ take it back
2/ it'll go away.

It sounds almost like a bearing running, but I can't see any reason for that to vary with drive torque. I wonder whether it might be something slightly loose/misplaced under the bonnet which is resonating. If you can reproduce the symptoms when stationary it ought to be dead easy for the garage to diagnose. I suggest you ask them to have a quick look at it. They might want you to leave it with them overnight if the problem only happens after a cold start.
The situation now has turned sour as the proprietor at the garage said following:
'We checked and sound is coming from the clutch/gearbox area and not the belt area'.
After I said, if it's the clutch, and I pay to replace the clutch, will it definitely be gone and he said 'can't guarantee 99% sure'.
He said I can get a different garage to have a look at it to check, but he basically doesn't want it in his court anymore and thinks that just simply by coincidence the clutch is now playing up.
The noise that happened when I gave it to them only happened during *in* gear at around 2,000rpm. This no longer happens.
This noise is different sounding, only occurs when it is cold and when the car is going into gear.
So I now need to check with another garage to find out what the problem is.
He was aggressive when I said I'd need to check into this and have some written proof.
So tomorrow I'll need to go into town again and try and get another garage to look at it.

And it did not make this noise before ?
Given the work you describe, it could maybe be a belt rubbing somewhere or something, but it is hard to tell.
A video would be a bit better pointing towards where you think the noise is coming from.
I've sent a longer reply since, but, the first noise has gone, and now I have a different noise.Given the work you describe, it could maybe be a belt rubbing somewhere or something, but it is hard to tell.

Paper work says:
renew cooland pump with air conditioning
water pump and seal part no 201590111
alternator belt 202777435
drive belt 202777365

Did they have to remove or slacken an engine mount ?
If so, maybe they haven't refitted it correctly, causing too much flex, and the noise is simply something rubbing as a consequence.
From the videos I've seen of the ford fiesta having water pump replaced, yes it looks like they do. They usually drop right side of engine to get access to the timing belt plastic cover + water pump.If so, maybe they haven't refitted it correctly, causing too much flex, and the noise is simply something rubbing as a consequence.
He also took drivers side wheel off.
The noise goes away once engine is running for about 10 minutes. Then takes about 3 hours to cool down to hear it again. It is quite loud as in the recording.

Hi,
I have booked it into a nearby garage, it's a old friends dads one.
However, I have since used a cardioid (unidirectional) microphone and used my iphones camera pointed in the same direction.
I then used adobe auditions spectral frequency to help visualise the noise.
Video: .. https://streamable.com/gxyn4
Previous audio recording only: https://vocaroo.com/i/s0hLkxb9oFJf
Couple notes - a friend was in the car at the time lifting the clutch a small amount to achieve the noise.
The reason I went to the other side was because the original garage said he heard it from the right.
The second section I try to pinpoint the noise coming from the left section by going up/down.
If anyone has heard this sort of thing before when engine is cold, I'd really like to know.
Thanks.

Can't really identify the noise to be specific.
But you can only get the noise by operating the clutch? And only when cold?
In which case I think it is coincidental to the water pump work. Is it possible that noise couldn't be heard because of the noise from the pump before its change?
Worth getting another opinion from somebody who can look and listen, but I don't think it is related to the water pump work.
Don't forget, from a garage point of view, they get inundated with comments like, "ever since you done my exhaust, my brakes dont work properly" or "ever since you changed my spark plugs my exhaust rattles". So if they weht nowhere near your clutch and the noise is related to that, they are likely to feel defensive.
Eta.
Other option is to take the belt off and see if the noise happens then, confirm if it is water pump end or clutch end. If it stops when the belt is off then spin all the pulleys by hand, see/feel/listen for wear/noise.
