Kia Sportage kx4 issues starting

OK my first post so be kind (i do have more interesting cars!)
2014 Kia Sportage diesel, put in 20quids worth and 10mins drive later pulled up, then wouldn't start. Came back hour later tried starting and finally started ok after a bit of throttle.
Tried it again cold on driveway doesn't want to fire up straight away turns over with a bit of throttle, 4/5 seconds later starts. Turn off then fires up fine straight away. Almost like heaters aren't activating? Any other ideas? I heard someone mention something about return fuel line, but im not that clued up on diesel. Thoughts appreciated!
Oh it hasn't had a new fuel filter for a long time that i know.

100% sure you put diesel in? Really actually definitely 100% sure?
If you are sure, like really sure then change the filter for starters. If not changed at correct service interval then they can become restricted.
How many miles since last filter?
