F56 JCW Engine Noises
Discussion
I had my F56 JCW Mini remapped nearly 2 years ago and ever since it was done there has been a strange noise that is either coming from the engine or transmission under load.
I initially went back to the tuner but over time it was forgotten and now it’s a bit late to get anything done and given the circumstances I’ve accepted where I am with it.
The car was remapped at just under two years old and had roughly 25k-30k miles on the clock at the time. It had been serviced three times by Mini at this point, once was before I purchased the car and the other two were whilst in my possession.
The noise is a slight knock from the engine/transmission under moderate load. I can’t quite locate where it is coming from but it does increase with revs and doesn’t change whether the car is in sport mode or normal and does not change between Auto and Manual mode. The noise has NOT got any worse over the two years since the remap and is not present when revving the car when stationary. I should also add that the car is now on 45k miles and I would’ve thought the noise would’ve got worse if it was a rod/bearing issue.
The only thing I have noticed that does affect the noise is if I progressively increase the throttle then the noise is less likely to start. Whereas if I quickly press the throttle to 2/3 or 3/4 throttle it is more likely to happen.
The noise is not noticeable when driving normal day-to-day stuff.
The car has also since been serviced again by Mini and I am told they sample the removed oil for any contaminants that indicate an internal issue and I can assume that no issues were found however I am not sure how true this is.
Does this sound like a fuelling issue following the remap? Pre-detonation perhaps? Would changing the spark plugs to Iridiums be a good place to start to see if this changes anything.
I would eventually like to take the car to somewhere like Lohen or Dervtech but I’m down in the depths of the South West so would rather tag the trip to a tuner in with something else..
Any thoughts on this noise? I can try and get a video of the issue if this would help?
