This is a very specific question and I'm wondering if anyone one here knows these engines well?

I've dropped the sump pan to cure a bad oil leak along the rear of same. As expected it's the famous 'cigarette seals' either side of the rear main bearing cap - these were quite loose so oil would clearly leak past them. I don't have the time to order new ones as I want to get it back together over the weekend so propose to re install them with a smear of Loctite copper - anyone done this?

I will then refit the sump with a new gasket and Permatex Aviation Nr1 on both faces and hope that cures it.

Any hints and tips?

I suggest you have a look at AlfaBB, from the top of my head I think loads of people on there use Permatex Ultra Grey.

Cheers for that.

I went with Loctite copper on the existing cigarette seals, permatex Nr3 on the upper sump on both gasket faces and Loctite 518 with no gasket on the lower sump pan and I'm now completely free of oil leaks.

....but what complete and utter bd of a job is dropping the upper sump pan on an Alfa Spider. I work on Minis and Loti too and I can't think of a worse job that I've ever done on a car!

sorry, only just seen this. I rebuilt mine using permatex black in place of the cigarette seals, as these can leak over time/heat cycles, due to not being the optimum elasticity for the environment they are placed in.

Thanks Fergus.

I'm hopeful! I was going to fill up the cigarette holes with Loctite 518 but was concerned that I could not guarantee full penetration without the engine on the bench and upside down and gravity working with me.

I think I'm going to be okay - the existing seals were fairly loose so I should have a good film thickness on them and with a good coating of Permatex Nr 3 on both faces of the new gasket there's nowhere for the oil to go...fingers crossed anway!
