I want to check my pump timing with a dial gauge and my workshop manual says to set it with 2.5mm preload - I am using a 63mm gauge designed for compression testing, but there is no small dial stamped on the gauge measuring in mm, so how do I preload it? The only measurements shown on the dial are bars and psi, to repeat there is no small gauge on the face of the dial gauge. Does anyone know what I need to do to set it to 2.5mm? Or do I have to buy a different gauge? Looking online, there are many pressure dial gauges sold that do not have the small gauge stamped on them, so I am guessing there must be a way to preload without that, but can't find the answer anywhere online.

A dial gauge is a tool for measuring distances very accurately.

What you have there is a pressure gauge.

Your are trying to set distance, not pressure so a pressure gauge will not work - what you need is a "dial gauge" / "dial indicator".

Dial gauges have a shaft, which when moved truns the dial to indicate the amount of movement, the small dial in the gauge face indicates the number of rotations of the large dial, so if the gauge is scaled at 1mm / rotation & you have 2.5mm to measure - it would be 2 on the small gauge & 1/2 way round / 0.5 / 6:00 o'clock on the main gauge. These are readily available from about £25 for a reputable brand.

Try weighing yourself with a ruler.

Long and strong ruler, fulcrum and known weight, slide in and out till you are balanced thence work out what you weigh...a balance beam scales? Use two dial gauges to zero exact balance point in vertical plane? smile

Don't forget to buy the magnetic base as well, otherwise you'll have nothing to position your DTI with...
