Hi all,

I know I’ve been in here before with problems on the Astra but they are all getting fixed now got a mechanic willing to do a full head rebuild and then she’s golden. After this I was looking into fitting a turbo to her even had a quote from a garage looking at getting it mapped in. Just wondering if anyone’s added a turbo to the Astra g 1.6 8 valve and where do I start / what to look out for. I will be doing it all and have never done it before. I was thinking as the Astra g does have the Sri and gsi model which are petrol turbos if I Remember correctly that it shouldn’t be too much work.
I appreciate any help from anyone.

I do not need the comments that go along the lines of: “why?”, “what’s the point it’s only an old Astra.” And “will you declare it on your insurance”. 1 it’s none of your business and 2 why bother comment on the post if you have no interest in helping.

I believe this will make quite a good project and have already started to get the funds together to do it all.

Ok, I read your points 1 and 2.

For that reason, I'm out.

Can you do the spannering yourself?

If not then this is either a windup or the dreams of a madman.

What's the point? You'll spend a fortune, and for what?

Just sell it and get something already fitted with a turbo. Cheaper and easier - you'll be on the road instantly.

Its not easy, you need loads of parts.. Turbo, intercooler, exhaust, intake, manifolds, oil/coolant pipework.. That's before you look at the fuel pump, injection system, ecu, additional wiring, remap etc etc - just buy an astra turbo if you must have one.

Just cannot see the point in all the time/aggro/expense when the car you want already exists!

£10 to charity says you never get this done.....

the majority of old vauxhalls around here are c20/z20lets. It'd probably be easier and you'd have a better time researching an engine transplant instead of turbo charging your current engine

There isn’t many if any of these cars with turbos. Plus if we all went and bought the same stock cars with built in power then the car scene would be rather dead wouldn’t it. Theres a reason enthusiasts mod there cars and it’s not because there mate on the internet said it’s a good idea.

Btw going by your logic of just buying a car with a turbo already fitted why doesn’t everyone just buy ready made meals because it’s easier then cooking there own.

A engine transplant is definitely a possibility I sort of prefer the idea of having a car that no one else has. I prefer the exclusivity.

I could probably buy a 1.8 turbo diesel for £300 with something simple wrong and take all the intercooler, piping, turbo and bits from that if that’s possible. (Which I don’t see why it isn’t)

I know that the exhaust fittings are almost the exact same so that would be almost a straight swap to the engine, I would be able to use the inter cooler and piping with no issues.

As I said I had a word with a mapping company and they are more then happy to map it in for me for rather a decent price too. Fuelines and alike may be an issue but I’m sure it’s possible.

1. Don't forget an oil supply to the turbo.

2. Don't forget to put the (short) clip o=f it being dyno'd on YT for us. wink

If you do an engine swap, put a v8 in and turbo that. It will go faster than an Astra engine and be unique.
