My son is working on an old Le Mans Prototype, one of the first vehicles made by Norma in France.

He says:

The ecu fitted is a MoTec M8, which we're having trouble accessing. The ecu is fitted with the 10-pin Deutsch connector to Serial plug cable, but according to MoTec we're in need of their custom Serial to Serial cable (the one with the "ECU" label on one end). That would be a quick order, but the last time anyone in Germany ordered a cable was 6/7 years ago (the technology is 25 years old), so they are unlikely to have any left in stock.

I am asking whether anyone still has parts for these old systems, wiring diagrams to solder our own cable or can help us in this regard.

ps: The manufacturer was of little assistance here, they don't even have the original mapping files.

Any ideas?

Did you speak to a distributor or motec in australia?

It may be worth reaching out to peter auto who run one of the group c series to see if any of their grid can recommend anyone. This is their bread and butter.

The ECU is probably K-line (Half Duplex RS-485), rather than RS-232.

Might be worth joining the Guild of EFI Tuners group on Facebook and asking on there.

The "motec serial cable" is just a RS-232 to TTL level converter, ie the ecu does not have the transceiver locally mounted in it, it just has the TTL UART pins broken out to the 9 way d-sub connector on the ecu

If you need i'll take mine apart (if i can find it.... ;-) ) and reverse engineer it ?

The son here, thank you for the replies. I'll single out a few. An issue I've noticed is that there are two versions, of which we have the rarer, more difficult to connect to version.

We've spoken to the local MoTec dealers, who haven't had an order for a serial cable in 6/7 years. They offer one sent in from Australia, delivered hopefully sometime next week.

It's of the MIL type. The pdf (linked below) mentions a RS-232 adapter, where we have the Deutsch-RS232 cable, but no serial interface cable. MoTec features a webinar discussing the RS232 interface, with no mention of RS-485.

It probably only has a few resistors wired into the RS232 crossover cable to provide a hurdle for potential DIY sparkies. Is your cable for the MIL version with the round connector? See my reply to annodomini2, for pic and pdf with the exact model.

Thank you for the link. We're very interested, but the M8 features two Deutsch PIN connectors, one has a 10-pin which has the converter attached to it here. This device doesn't have CAN or the usual wide connector you feature in your links. It is a M8 MIL rather than standard M8. The link to the pdf can be found here. I'm guesssing your cable interfaces on the CAN bus rather than serial?

Not my cable, just a google search.

Probably just a different connector MIL probably stands for Military as yours looks to be using Military spec connectors.

It would be a matter of adapting the wide connections to your connections as a guess, to the connections in the MIL connector.
