Engine knocking Mazda3 2.0 petrol 2015
Discussion
Hi first ever post on here!
I have a Mazda3 2.0 skyactive petrol, recently the engine has started making a knocking noise when I start it. It goes as soon as the engine is running so only lasts a couple of seconds. It’s a very quick knocking/tapping noise. I’ve only had the car for 2 months. It wasn’t making this noise for the first 4 weeks I had it. I read something online and decided to put high octane fuel in the car. The noise went immediately! And since doing that it has came back but now it doesn’t happen every time! I put fuel injector cleaner through the system on my last tank aswell so I’m not sure if it’s that or the higher octane fuel which has helped as I’ve gone back to using standard fuel now, Anyone any ideas what this can be? The dealer is trying to tell me the noise is normal If you could hear the noise you’d realise how ridiculous this is. They are trying to avoid doing the warranty work.
Here’s a link to the car making the noise it’s kind of hard to hear but it’s a rattle/knock right after the initial start. Thanks

Sounds remarkably similar to a recent post. Is the vehicle rev hunting too?
Same as above, get a second opinion and take back to garage. Make sure it's from a Mazda dealer before you get a series of "this garage could be anyone" as I've had before.
Unfortunately it’s a Mazda dealer trying to pie me off :/ Ive spoken to Mazda direct and sent them videos of the car making the noise and it not making it after being told by their dealer it was normal. Waiting on a reply. I’m not sure what Rev hunting is? I’ll have a look into that though thanks. Do you have a link to the other post? I can’t figure out how to search the forums using key words, first time properly using this site right now Same as above, get a second opinion and take back to garage. With respect, that could be any one of a million things.
It's impossible to diagnose a fault from a description of a noise.
Take it to a different Mazda dealer.
Yeah I get that It's impossible to diagnose a fault from a description of a noise.
Take it to a different Mazda dealer.
I’m just thinking someone on here might have had the same issue with the same car.You might get more help on there if it's a known issue.

Have you checked your oil level recently?
A tapping noise that goes away quickly after start up is quite typical of oil starvation in the head, although on a new-ish engine i wouldn't have thought that would be possible without some sort of warning light but you never know!
Yeah the oil level is fine. Strangely though I had a low oil level light come on in the car after about 3 weeks and it went back to the dealer. Could it be something to do with this? Maybe they’ve used the wrong grade oil or mixed new oil with the old stuff? What do you reckon? Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if the oil light came on and you continued driving the car it is, quite possibly, knackered and time for a new engine. That rattle/ knock you're hearing could be the beginning of the end.
How does it sound when warm ?

If it's an approved Mazda car, the warranty is acceptable at any Mazda dealer. So either keep on at your supplying dealer or go to a different Mazda dealer till it's resolved. On the flip side, if the oil light came on and you drove it back to the dealer with it low on oil, you've likely caused damage and Mazda will be unlikely to help.

It wasn’t the oil light it was the check engine light which they told me was due to the oil level. They told me that the oil level was about half so it should be ok I think. Steved86 said:

Reading half on the dipstick or half capacity ?
Your car will take about 4.5 litres of oil. If it's been run on 2.5 litres of oil then that will cause damage to the bearings and will eventually lead to engine failure.
Did they service it before you bought it ?
