apparently these engines are quite common for having issues with the suction control valve which gives issues with idling

Dunno if its the same as petrol engines where the idle control valve can stick and cause it to stall on idle.

The following have been replaced with brand new parts:

Crankshaft sensor
Fuel regulator
Fuel pump
Fuel filter
Fuel pressure sensor
Were they tested & found faulty first or are you just loading the parts cannon with random parts in case you accidentally fix the issue?

I would be looking as above at the inlet side of things specifically also the possibility of an inlet air leak.

Last owner threw hundreds of quid into it and his mechanic started changing all these parts. He couldn't solve the issue.

Common for the pedal itself to give up on these same with a few other modern cars.
Bring back cables I say

A proper scan of codes and live data is the only sensible start. Throwing parts at it will more than likely have made finding the actual problem much harder, as you now have to factor in the person changing parts for no reason, having caused further problems.

The throwing parts at it has nothing to do with me, that was the previous owner and the dodgy mechanic he took it too. I have just bought it as spares and repairs, not to use it but to have a play with it, I normally fix my own cars so I like tinkering. It drove on the test drive ok, no noticeable issues other than whats stated. Actually it drove quite nice. Oh.. there was a little fuel siting on top of the injectors, but the camshaft cover was replaced and had a new one fitted, as well as the fuel system removed and checked over... So I assume that may be the reason why.

BUT

I may have just got a real lemon. biglaugh

About 10 miles down the road, it had a burning smell and a slight mist of smoke coming from every part of the car, when I mean every, I mean.. exhaust, wheel arches, around the bonnet shut...everywhere. Its not overheating at all though. I stopped for 5 mins and proceeded home about 18 miles and the smoke didn't reappear, although, the slight smell of burning was present. The mrs was behind me and told me it started smoking a tad from the exhaust about 10 miles down the road, but not constant. I need to check that out. Because of the cutting out when idling issue, I couldn't check the exhaust/revving properly when viewing it.

I will hook up my diag and see what it says. Although I suspect the worse on this one.

Got it £1000 to £1500 cheaper than the going rate though, so plenty of funds to play around with it with, which i'll do next week when I have some time.

Very common on these vehicles..

1. Fuel pump 'ecu'
2. Crankshaft position sensor
3. Fuel pump timing relay.

1. Runs badly then stalls, then cuts out. Does this continuously.
2. Runs really rough then stalls repeatedly
3. Drips diesel underneath vehicle

It would seem you're confusing this with a different vehicle.

Crankshaft sensor has been replaced.
Fuel pump relay is MISSING from the fuse box. Replaced it, but makes no difference at all.
Fuel pump ecu doesn't exist on this car. Its all embedded into the engine ecu.
