Hello!

I have a 2009 Subaru Impreza Diesel, it's an EE20 engine which is the same as other models of the same year...

Appreciate the audio isn't the best, but the car has started to make a hell of a racket at just under 2,000 when the turbo kits in, through the turbo upto around 3k revs (4.5k max)

From around 5 seconds on this audio clip is the noise the engine makes under slight load..
Link to Audio - https://drive.google.com/open?id=126JqlMlrF8Zh-u27...

Does anyone have any suggestions about where I should start?
Car runs completely fine, around 49mpg on a decent run, accelerates OK, just sounds like a bag of nails...

I'm scared it's getting worse and it'll go bang..

Thank you

The wind noise is loud lol

The engine noise is quieter....but it does not sound like diesel knock...more possibly rods.

Which is not good.

Drain hot oil and inspect, and cut oil filter open if possible and inspect.

ERG problems can alter the engines sound.

I recently changed the oil and filter and nothing looked really out of place..
Is it worth noting that I had some EGR valve issues and that it's now been replaced with one which is fully closed smile

Assume you me EGR, I did have problems with this a few months ago but I replaced it a few months ago and it's not thrown up any codes since

So you properly examined the oil that came out, and cut the filter open to inspect it ?

Get an experienced mechanic to listen to it.

It's extremely difficult to diagnose noises over the internet.

I didn't cut the filter open, but looking at the oil there was no real metal pieces etc.
When I changed it, I was expecting chaos but it didn't look too bad.

That's because if there was anything it'll be in the filter.
