Car won't go into gear when running
Discussion
I have a 2008 kia Rio. Manual.
Last week I stopped at a junction and it would not go into any gear. I turned engine off and put it into first then drove home. I topped up the transmission fluid which was black in colour.
The past week its randomly not going into gear when the car is running. Goes into gear when engine is off though.
This morning the car wouldn't start, it turns over though but turns over with one long noise. With out the usual starting sound.
I put the car into second with engine off and pushed the car hoping it would rock. However the car continue to move back even when in gear. It did start eventually could it be related to gear issue?
Garage can't get me in until next. Any idea what it could be?
Thanks in advance.

Gear going in with the engine off, but not with it running, usually means a clutch problem, I.e that it is not disengaging properly so the torque is not being taken off the gearbox input shaft when you want to change gear. Alternatively shagged 1st gear synchroniser but if you can’t get any gear then I’d suspect clutch.
Clutch is either worn past the point of no return or the release bearing or mechanism has failed in some way, so the required release travel cannot be achieved to open the clutch.

Could it be related to car not starting? Car has 55.000 miles on clock.Clutch is either worn past the point of no return or the release bearing or mechanism has failed in some way, so the required release travel cannot be achieved to open the clutch.
Thanks
How did you top the transmission fluid up? This is usually a difficult, dirty job with limited access.
Do you mean that you topped the clutch fluid up (the small reservoir on the bulkhead)? If so, the fact that it was black certainly points to a problem with either the master cylinder or (more likely) the slave cylinder.

T'ain't just newbs though is it? I'm regularly racked off by OPs never coming back after people have offered suggestions.
