Hey guys.

I've just had my VW Gold tdi mk5 (55 plate) MOT'd and it's failed on a smoke test. It's done just under 119,000 miles. The garage said there was a sticker in the engine compartment that contradicted the level that was specified by the DVSA in terms of smoke emissions. It tested 1.55 which is way under the 2.5-3.0 level permitted but the guidelines state the if there is a sticker to say otherwise, they have to go by this. Mine says 0.80. Is this on the passenger door or should it be in the engine compartment somewhere too? I'd just like to check for myself as it's a garage I've never been to before.

Secondly, how can I get it to pass if it is 0.80?!!

Cheers!

Get the garage to show you the location of the sticker.

No point removing the stickers, now its tested its too late for this years MOT. But you do need to damage it for next year.

I assume its the 1.9 ? when was it last serviced ? a bottle of emissions cleaner, oil and are filters and spank the bottom off it for 30 minutes and then retry.

It’s not too late - remove sticker and send it to a different garage - they have to test as presented

I am sending it to another garage. I have some redex. Would that be the stuff to use?? My fuel and air filters were replaced in my last full service back in feb of this year, so they should still be fine.

Rip sticker off, put redex in when tank is low so it doesn't dilute and give it a decent drive.

As the owner of an older diesel this system seems very harsh - the plate figures for older cars are often lower than for newer ones. Apparently in Finland there was such an outcry about it with so many cars failing they switched to using the default figures after a month.

Mine was tested at 3 last year and 1.5 this year - it passed, but not by much. There is a scarily lower figure on the VIN plate but it's not in the place the guides suggest (bottom right) so it may not be the same thing.

They gave none. If it doesn't pass, the car will be scrapped. He suggested defacing the sticker but I can' find it in the engine compartment. He gave a print out telling me where to find it but I can only find a sticker in the door that has the VIN number and and a figure in a box of 0.80, whihc tallies with the figure he said it would be.

Yeh I understand that- don’t take it for a retest. Just take it for a full mot test at another garage.
A retest uses the previous failed mot test number to retest it. A full mot is a completely new separate test

You need to accidently shut the seatbelt in the door,..... hopefully it will be somewhere near the 0.8 figure.

You have nothing to lose in some emissions reducer and thrash the nuts off and having it retested, then if it fails again take it elsewhere.

I expect you'll find that's the sticker he's referring to and he simply mis-remembered where it was.

Sorry - I read it as they recorded the figure for all to see, but re-reading it seems it does just apply to retests.

0.8 does sound feasible for your car - I've seen 0.6. 0.8 and 1.0 quoted for models with the same engine.

The DVSA changed the rules very quickly, when the test was changed may 2018 cars could be tested against a default figure of 3 on the retest if they failed to meet the figure on the data plate.

find a friendlier garage, not to pass it but to point out where this sticker is and what your options are.

scrap it seems extreme

Exactly. Plus I can't afford another car. Will have another look tonight, add the redex and I'm taking it to another garage for another test tomorrow morning. Cheers for the advice everyone.
