Hello

Just put my Toyota Verso in for repair and was very shocked that they came back with a Gearbox and clutch replacement at £4.5K. The car is probably worth £3K, done 110,000 miles and we have had it since new. They have gone off to check if they can do it cheaper, but I doubt it.

Before they come back, wanted to roughly know what my options are. Take the car back and scrap it? Where do I scrap it? Ask them to part exchange?

Sorry if these are noddy questions, never experienced this before.

Thanks.

If the car is worth £3.5k and it needs £4.5k in repairs how much do you realistically expect them to give you in part ex ?

Who has quoted you this, a main dealer?

Tell us where you are, somebody will be able to recommend a decent local garage that would probably charge a fraction of that to repair it.

Where did the £4.5k come from - dealer or reconditioned gearbox specialist ?

"Here, take this effectively worthless, basically written-off car as a deposit"

You should get that much, much cheaper than that price. The big factor is not cost to replace the car as much as the cost to repair. Many Verso's live hard lives as taxis and school run kerb stunt cars, getting another good one (if you want that) isn't so easy.

They said they would offer discount against something as there are some scrappage offers about.

I'm on the East Sussex / Kent border and this is with a main dealer in Tunbridge Wells.

I’d be tempted to get a second opinion from a back street garage, repair / bodge it and hobble another couple years out of it.

If you trade this in at the main dealer, one of their mechanics will be selling your car in no time at all for £1000+

As above, you need to establish if this cost is for new parts - reconditioned parts can be bought much cheaper. Furthermore, where is the labour? Main dealers can be expensive. For example, I had a turbo go on a car a few years ago and BMW wanted £1500 for the part, and a lot more on top of that to fit it. I can't remember the figure but it was well north of £2k on a car worth about £5k at the time. I got a reputable specialist to fit a reconditioned turbo for about £1400 all in. I spoke to the car's current owner recently, and it's still going strong at over 200k miles.

Take it somewhere else for a second opinion. Get a second hand box from ebay for a few quid (if that is the problem), new clutch and flywheel, and go.
Sounds like a quote from someone who doesn't want the work

As said

A new clutch and refurb box might be less than half that if you go to a indie specialist. Lots about.

You need a lobotomy to want to take a 3k car to a main dealer, get a trusty mechanic buy the parts and get him to fit. It's what I've been doing for years. You can probably get that work done plus parts for sub 2k easily, whether you want to go ahead is your call.

Take it to some random garage. What needs a new gearbox and clutch at a dealer could be a cheap fix to a sensible mechanic

Yes but if we all did what you did, we'd all be sitting in the outside lane doing 69 with our engines randomly surging, making us all look like idiots on our dashcam.

Even if my advice would be similar, it would be posted in a less "Ask a tt from an internet forum" kind of way.

OP - I'd get a second opinion, your car is at that age where a main dealer will be looking on it as a Sales Opportunity rather than a Service one. Why fix your old Verso when they can sell you something new and shiny?

I definitely read that post in the 'voice' of TPFAIF hehehehe

OP - If you were maybe looking at replacing it with a new one in the coming future, the dealers scrappage deals may be worth looking into.

Or if you want to keep it going for a little while longer, I'd suggest taking to to an Independent who, I would guess, would fit a new clutch, supply/fit a reconditioned gearbox for around £1000. I've had two MINI gearboxes replaced with refurbished units, with new clutches each time, and it came to around £650-£700 but this was back in 2012 and 2015.

OP what have you noticed regarding the car recently? Have the gear changes been crunchy etc

I think manual gearboxes in something like thus are rare to fail, so a used one is definitely an option IMO.

I'd definitely try and get an non main dealer or even mobile mechanic to look at it, gearbox off for clutch change (which I assume is obviously gone) so provide the gear is exactly the right type this could be very little cost over a normal new clutch.

A quick google seems this Toyota box is not as hardy as I'd imagined!

Do try and get a cheaper quote elsewhere.

As for deciding to go with the repairs or not; what car can you get for £4500 that you know you can trust? Like you say, you've had that current car since new. What would you realistically have to pay to buy a car you can be happy with? £7000? £12,000? £28,000?

It's not so much the cost of repair vs the value of the car, is the cost of repair vs the cost of a replacement vehicle.

Speak to Steve at Rotherfield Gearboxes he will give you the low down on this gearbox , get the box removed over to him or a used box if its a total loss (very doubtful) and assembled with a new clutch Bobs your uncle , these boxes are plagued with premature bearing failure due to often the case fitted cheap inferior bearings , not big branded or Japanese sourced Honda are under the same spell , that quote is just ridiculous IMO Get the box worn diagnosis confirmed 1st however
