VW Lupo cuts out when taking foot off accelerator?

I have a 1.4 petrol VW Lupo. Occasionally when I take my foot off the gas pedal the engine cuts out, the steering becomes heavy etc and I have to restart it.
The problem happens both when the engine is hot or cold. It’s a real nuisance at roundabouts, lights and junctions I’m having to keep the revs up when I slow down which isn’t doing the clutch any good!
The car does get regular drives on dual carriage ways at 70mph etc.

I had the same problem once with a Daewoo matiz.

What could be the cause and is it an easy problem to fix?

It's the throttle body which needs cleaning.
Its a diy job with some carb cleaner available in an aerosol or alternatively brake and clutch cleaner.
Use an old toothbrush to remove the carbon build up.
