Urgh can I have some help please my Alfa 159 had just had it's 4th!!!! Driveshaft failure in the year, less than 5000 miles. It's spent about 3 months + off the road waiting for parts frown no obvious you should have bought German jokes please 🤣When it's going it's great but I'm out of love with it now.

Clearly something else is going on. Each "replacement" has been under warranty after the first (original?) failed. Even using different brands just in case. The last one lasted 3 weeks not even 1000 miles. It's going back but I feel I need some guidance as to what else I should be asking them to look at. They have clearly missed something so far!

How are they failing?

How much have they cost? What brands? there are a lot of cheap own brands about these days. Just because a different brand doesn't mean better quality.

Definitely sounds like there is something else amiss. What is 'failing' about the driveshaft? And which driveshaft are we talking about - you said it's a 159 so it's FWD. I presume you mean that the CV joints on the end of the driveshafts keep failing.

I'm not sure what else could be wrong which could cause an early failure of the parts but it's also possible that the garage are fitting them wrongly. Are they failing to lubricate them, for example? Or doing something up to the wrong torque?

How much experience does the garage have of working on 159's? They are't terribly esoteric but is this a specialist garage or a general one?

Having broken and twisted a few driveshafts on track using slicks, I also think something is wrong elsewhere in your drivetrain, - as others have suggested..

I am totally guessing?? that its the CV joint itself that is braking, which suggests either exceptional torque (issue with the diff or traction control) or the ABS system is locking up the disc/outer CV while the gearbox is trying to put power through it.

Can you provide more information on which part of the shaft is failing?
Inner, outer, bearing, cage etc..

I'm going to take a stab at super-cheap refurb shafts, it's so rare for normal shafts that aren't already knackered to break on a normal car being used sensibly.

If the diff was locked up internally this could stress shafts excessively.

I have also seen aftermarket shafts that are substantially weedier than the OE alternative.

Aftermarket shafts can be a real hit-miss, if you haven't tried OE worth a try.

Has the steering been messed with? Knocked about? Had the geometry properly checked?

If your steering rack isn’t centred you could be getting too much steering angle on that side at full lock which could over-stress the CV joint.

Probably cheap driveshafts supplied by garage, not spec'd by us. Cv end snapped. Last one went bang whilst pootling in a 30 limit. Gearbox seems ok, engine mounts checked. No crashes. Lowered but not crazy low. Previous leak on steering rack but no other issues with rack, pipe replaced no work to rack itself. I don't have the car here now to check if it's the same turns lock to lock but own d car for 3 years. Nothing in history re drive shafts and nothing to suspect the one that went at the start of the year wasn't the original on the car.

Oh, garage on not Alfa specialist (they are VW specialist 🤭) but have looked after lots of our cars including last 2 Alfas.

Obviously I could take it to specialist, but at this point i'm sort of in the ha ds of this place as they did original replacement.

No mechanic is going to appreciate being told what to check for by the customer, let alone when the customer got that advice from a bunch of strangers on the internet. They should be the ones telling you what they're looking for. They would probably get some clues from an examination of whatever failed - either by them, or their supplier.

Wow, thanks for that! If it hadn't failed so many times I'd agree with you. But at this point it seems they are pretty clueless too which is not the ideal.

Are they all failing in the same way? Is the aftermarket driveshaft the right one for the car, ie the exact right length? How much has the car been lowered?

I can see that people complain of failures on the diesel - which engine is yours?
