Mondeo mk4 running issues
Discussion
Hi all i hope you can help, im asking on behalf of my parents who have a running issue with their 2009 2.0 tdci. They mentioned a week ago it randomly cut out on them for no reason and after 15-30 mins it would restart, then it became more frequent untill i visited them to have a look and it conked out completely now is refusing to start at all. They had an AA engineers report stating fault codes showing
P0087 Rail pressure too low
P0088 Rail pressure too high
P0089 Rail pressure outside specified range
P0101 Air mass sensor (think this could be a historic one)
He mentioned it refused to fire on easy start but cambelt was turning and still tensioned.
I have investigated furthur, when cranking there is absolutly nothing reaching the high pressure rail, just a dribble. Absolutly nothing showing on live data for rail pressure and a cranking speed of 280rpm average which should be plenty.
Where do i go from here guys, really need to get to the bottom of this for them.
Any help appreciated guys

Hi
Ive been having a think about this and wouldnt pay to much attention to these fault codes. I dont know how youve gone about checking for fuel at the rail, if you crack open a pipe on most common rail system they sense a leak and close down the system so all you will get will be a dribble.
The fact it wouldnt fire on easy start suggested to me it wasnt recieving a signal from the crank sensor but then I noticed youve got a cranking speed on live data so that rules out that thought.
The next thing that came to mind was a problem Ive come across twice with the 2.2TDCI once in a Mondeo and once in a Jag X-Type and that was the EGR valve stuck open, in both cases they point blank refused to fire. Cant think of the layout on the 2.0 off hand but on the 2.2 the EGR valve is right on the front of the engine o/s and is a 10 minute job to remove and check you can visibly see the valve stuck open.

Still trying to chase this non start issue. After having p0087/p0088/p0088 faults come up I've replaced the fuel filter as a first port of call. This hasn't solved it but my scanner is showing more than it did before. I had no pressure at all when cranking last time but now i have a very very low average 16-19psi. How can I tell if I have a faulty rail pressure switch or bad hp pump? Thanks guys
Thanks for the reply guys, these mk4s only have a high pressure pump in engine and no lift pump in the tank. I have ensured fuel supply as these use a clear feed pipe and I've also used the bleed off by the pump to draw fuel through incase of air locks.
There is a bit more history to this, it was running fine one moment then a few weeks ago would randomly cut out, leave it for 15 to 30 mins and could restart, the then about a week ago it cut out under steady throttle and hasn't wanted to restart since. It was recovee by the RAC and gave me the codes shown above and also said he was concerned that it would not fire on easy start even though the belt was still present and turning. But I think the main issue is a fuel problem, doesn't seem to have enough pressure to fire the injectors.
