My 1996 LR Defender 300tdi failed its MOT today due to high emissions, apparently they couldn't complete that part of the test as the readings were off the scale.

It's not been used much over recent months which I think maybe the problem. I've bought some Millers Ecomax injector cleaning additive to run through the fuel tank, and Im going to be taking it out for some blasts of acceleration to try and clear any cr@p from inside.

Any other suggestions please?

It could do with an oil change, and theres some black smoke when starting up, and accelerating hard, but nothing ore than the last 14yrs that I've owned it.

Fuel additive, service it and give it a hard drive. Make sure they are also testing it to appropriate levels ie they arent trying to test it as if its a 2019 car with DPF.

as above, oil & filter is good place to start.
brim the tank with 'premium' diesel as opposed to the cheap stuff and go for a good long drive to get everything hot

dont buy fuel additives on brand name, look at the chemistry. 2ehn is the active ingredient in diesel additives, usually a tiny amount mixed into a bottle of kerosene/naptha etc. buy a litre of 2ehn from ebay for the same price as a small bottle of additive from halfords, and add 100ml to the fuel tank.

emissions numbers will drop through the floor.

Thanks for the replies.

Ive put some BP Ultimate diesel in the tank, and given it some Milers Ecomax (purchased before I saw Olas post above), and I've been out for some heavy footed drives, and will do more each day.
Ive ordered new air & oil filters, and will do an oil change.
Theres also a bolt going through the accelerator pedal, fitted as a restrictor i believe, I shall adjust that on the morning of the re-test so that the pedal can't be pressed fully down.

Fuel filter would be wise to change as well.

Done an oil & filter change, and will be doing a fuel filter change tomorrow

Millers Ecomax additive added to a tank of BP Ultimate diesel

Taken it out for some heavy footed drives.

On morning of test I will give it another hard drive and then adjust the accelerator so it can’t go to normal max revs.

Re-Test is Tuesday.

Are the lambda results off at all? As it could indicate a leak in the exhaust which is throwing the emissions.

That's all I know about it.

It's a diesel.

We wait the outcome with baited breath, did it or didn't it? I'm going with no.
