Hi,

I've recently had problems with the timing chain (stretched) and bending in the camshafts on my 2008 Audi A3 1.8t.

Only had the car for just about a year, and taken it from 94,000 - 100,000 miles (so 6,000 miles done in the year).

I've taken the car to a garage for assessment and valuation for repair, and being quoted £2,500 (parts and labour) to fix the camshafts and new timing chain & tensioner, or £3,500 to do an engine replacement and new timing chain/tensioner. Thinking this is crazy expensive for a car I bought for 3.2k this time last year.

Another garage has quoted £2,000 for an engine strip and rebuild, including new timing chain/tensioner, cam shafts fixed, and general rebuild.

Leading to my question (new to this forum smile ), do you think it would be a better idea to do the £2,000 rebuild and keep the car for another 2-3 years as I was planning, or break the car down for parts and sell parts? Car is in otherwise very good condition!

Thanks in advance!

Buy a engine from ebay for £300 and pay someone to fit. Cheapest way to get on the road again.

you can buy a complete head off ebay for 5/600 quid. new gaskets, bolts & tensioner will see you on the road for less than 1k all in.

remember that preventative maintenance exists for a reason

Are you sure its bent the cams ? has the chain failed or just stretched ? It its just the chain its around £1000 using genuine parts. There is no need to buy a head. To swap an engine over i guess you would be looking around 18 hours in labour by the time you have swapped parts over and even then you would replace the chains while its apart.

Garage has said 2 of the camshafts are bent, and the timing chain is stretched, not completely gone!

Ideally want to keep the car as I’ve put loads of work into it and not had it very long smile

Sometimes its better just to walk away.
Its just a bite of one of lifes st Sandwiches.
It will turn into a money pit if you need to pay someone to do the work for you.
Its an old car.
Sell it for bits.
Get drunk.
Start afresh.

I'm a bit concerned about a garage that said "two of the cams are bent", when investigating a car that only has two cams....

In my view it is certainly not beyond repair but I would allow around £1500 to £2000 to get this back up to full strength depending on if you decide to go down the ebay route (in which case it could be cheaper) or get the garage to repair the various bits.

Personally, if I was in your position, I would keep the car if it's otherwise reasonably solid.

Yet another bizarre post.

So you have a car that was running and driving ? and drove it to a garage with no claimed faults...and they're telling you the cams are bent ?

Or is there some other history you haven't told us ? as you haven't said the car stopped, broke down, made any noises, or had any symptoms of a problem.

Because what is being said sounds mental. Like really mental.

At no point did they say they drove it to the garage, nor do they say that it arrived at the garage with no faults.

The OP is asking if the quote sounds reasonable for what the garage has diagnosed as needing replacing, or if they should go a different route.

‘Mental’ seems a bit strong, with regards to the OP’s post at least....

I can understand bent valves. I can get my head around bent con-rods. But to be honest I have not heard of cams bending (which isn't to say it can't happen, I've just never heard of it before....).

Would be good to see some pics of the components that are alleged to have bent/deformed.

I think the question to ask is how much will it cost you to replace the car ? Replace it, then you don't know what might go wrong with the replacement. If this one is otherwise ok it's got to be worth repairing it, unless your going to get a cheap banger to run round in instead.

Well they can bend but I don’t see how they could be bent in this case.

Exactly...which is another reason why what is being posted seems insane.

Yes they could bend.....but it might take a 50cal punching through the engine a few times to cause such a thing ?

I suspect it is all a bit of dis-information & he actually (OP or Mechanic) meant twisted based on the cam chain being stretched, but who knows, as even that sounds a bit far-fetched.

It is likely to be bent valves. The TSI engines have a habit of stretched chains but give a fair bit of warning before going out, not sure about 1.8T.
