Car is a VW polo, 10 years old.

Bashed a kerb at about 15mph on Sunday, went over it in a car park (no injuries etc, just misjudged the turn), couple of days later car throws out ESP Amber warning light, then when car turned off then back on again at that point, throws out Amber check engine light.

Car goes into garage to be looked at.

Garage thinks it needs a new timing belt, after running diagnostics and replacing a sensor but the fault light(s) not going away, I'm not so sure, i still think there's a smaller fault. Seems too ideal there could be a £700-1k fault so soon after the hit.

What do we reckon, PH?

Buy a code reader (£20-30 from eurocarparts) cancel the codes and see what happens.

Running over the kerb and getting a CEL sounds unconnected. A ESP light, yes as that might be due to a ABS sensor getting a thud.

If you needed a team timing chain or tensioners you'd know about it with a lot if rattling noise.

Sounds like a whole heap of bullst to me.

Go to a different garage for a second opinion. Or even better, follow the advice above.

Thanks so far, i have a ECP around the corner from me, practically a 4 minute walk so I'll get a reader and have a look. Was already looking at taking it to halfords for a second opinion as well, I'm going to ring them but been so busy with work and everytime i tried to ring on break i couldn't get through.

I don't know much about cars but know basics and also know when my gut is playing up.

I'll see what this weekend brings.

I know there is a slight rattle on start up sometimes, noticeable enough for me to notice but not enough for me to have been concerned, I just thought it was as its an older car.

So it maybe that the garage is correct, I just can't believe the coincidence.

Sorry I've just reread your first post. I have no experience of Polos but a timing belt won't rattle ever. A tensioner pulley might but not a belt. Maybe they were suggesting it was due a belt change completely unrelated to the problem you went in with?

Ask about and find a decent local garage.

Ain't gonna do ABS lights/codes. Needs a little better than cheap crap for that.

I actually think it's a chain, not a belt as I've put, think my model is the only one of the mk to have a chain rather than a belt. If that makes a difference.

I was tipsy when i started the thread, genuine excuse!

Which engine is it?

For example, the 1.9 tdi had a timing belt to run the cam, but also a small chain off the crank nose that runs the oil pump.

The garage diagnosis sounds fishy as hell though.

The 3 cylinder?

I think those are a chain, yes.

A mechanic next door to me had similar trouble with that nasty little 3 cylinder Polo engine in his Grandsons car at the time and it turned out to be the timing chain and sprockets that had worn out allowing the cam timing to jump and throw up the error codes.

Do not wasted your time taking it to Halfords. At best you will end up with a trained tyre fitter diagnosing it.

They are a chain and they are notorious for wearing prematurely on this engine, often to the point of jumping teeth.

Well went into the garage today, they took me through the code reader plugged in while i was there, the ESP light was still on and coming back on immediately every time they cleared it.

Engine management light has gone off though, but on start up it is obvious there's a belt fault, i think I'd just not really paid much attention to it as the car was running fine with the odd judder at idle, nothing i was massively worried about.

I'm pondering over it for the next couple of days but will likely just plump for having the chain change, then it's mot and service in October and there'll be minor rust to sort out come mot time.

It's a good job i love the car and it's served me well.
