My W123 Mercedes clunks when I lift up the clutch to pull away. It also clunks when changing between 1st and second and to a lesser extent, 2nd to 3rd.
I can almost eliminate it by letting clutch out slowly.
I've changed flex discs which hasn't made any difference.
When I grab propshaft and turn when gearbox is in neutral and wheels on ground, I can replicate the noise.
I've had a comment from Merc forum that this could be due to worn axle shafts.
Can anyone confirm if this is most likely, or diff problem?
Car has done 107000 miles.

Disconnect the propshaft from the diff input flange & turn the flange.
Does it still clunk?

When I replaced the flex disc I did that and yes, turning the input flange resulted in the same noise.

If the driveshafts are not moving looks like excessive lash between crown-wheel and pinion (mesh) certainly looks and sounds like its internal, mileage/wear and tear they always slacken with age frown my money is on wearing pinion bearings or poor assembly, unlikely to be a worn crown-wheel and pinion IME unless they are prone or had quality control issues hardness etc , I would consider that excessive definitely if its all play from the diff itself eek compared to say a good used 160k miles BMW diff I have on the floor with what can only be described at maybe 1mm or less slack/lash to give you an indication thats healthy for a differential Open LSD or otherwise

Thanks for that.
Do you think that would be enough to make the clunk noise I hear when pulling away/changing gear. It does sound similar.
There doesn't seem to be any other noises.
