Hi

I have recently bought a 2006 audi a4 3.0tdi quattro, I have been getting limp mode and glow plug flashing, upon inspection i have a mass gunk/oil build up from around the turbo.

My question is when I remove the turbo to clean, what is best to use? I have heard mr muscle but that's when it's in situ and on exhaust side so the other side I'm not so sure?

I feel like I may be falling for a wind-up here, but if you have an oil leak you should be looking to fix the oil leak, not clean away the symptoms. Removing the turbo just to clean it is bonkers. When you've fixed the problem you'd clean the parts before refitting using any degreaser you like. There are many brands that work well - Gunk is a well known example. Petrol and a stiff brush works too, if you want to live a little more dangerously.

The fault codes are p0046 and p0299. From what I have read it's the vvt that is blocked.

Obviously once turbo is out then I will see if its come from elsewhere not leaking at the inlet of the turbo

If the VNT is malfunctioning then quite often you should have an over-boost fault code/condition which will force limp
