Hi,
I replaced the spark plugs, HT leads and coil pack on a 1242cc Ford engine ('05 Fiesta) recently and found that the 'plugs were rusty and wet.

There are some threaded inserts on the rocker cover which I think could be for a spark plug cover to keep the water out...is that right?

The air box is present but offset from the rocker cover so that isn't the reason for the inserts on this application.

never seen a cover on that engine,
they are bad for the 2 core plugs between the plugs to leak,

Thank you, the inserts must be used in another application then.

The end of the HT leads should be sealing the area below the cam cover where the spark plugs reside.

As vw_99 says, rusty water in this area on these engines is very likely to be caused by rusted out core plugs, there is a core plug between cylinders 1 & 2 spark plugs, and another between cylinders 3 & 4 spark plugs. Not a terrible job to fix and one that should be done sooner rather than later as they will get worse.

The point about the plug leads sealing that area makes sense. It's it feasible to change the core plugs wuthering the engine in but rocker cover removed?

Sounds like a job to do when I replace the timing belt.

No need to remove engine, just take the cam cover off and it will be obvious where the problem is and how to proceed. Not a hard job at all, plenty of guides on youtube and various forums etc.
